13:25 The Sistine Chapel

Visit Duration: 1 hour, 30 mins
The Sistine Chapel is the most famous masterpiece of Michelangelo. It is in the Vatican Museum and is
named after Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484), who commissioned the restoration of the earlier Cappella Magna.
The new chapel was inaugurated in 1483. The Sistine Chapel is renowned for the frescoes on its ceiling.
Michelangelo was tasked to paint the 12 apostles on the ceiling, but he was eventually given a free hand. He
designed a scaffolding and painted the ceiling while lying on his back. The Sistine Chapel is decorated with 9
important events in the Book of Genesis. The most iconic is the painting of God touching the finger of Adam
to give him life. On the edges are the 7 prophets and 5 Sibyls. The corners depict the salvation of the
Israelites. The chapel has a permanent choir; regular mass is held throughout the year. However, the
chapel’s most important event is the Papal Conclave, in which popes are elected by the College of Cardinals.

Visit Duration: 15 mins
0.2 KM, 3 minutes walking from St. Peter's Basilica
St. Peter’s Square is in Vatican City and in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. The square was designed by Bernini,
who also played a part in designing the basilica in the 1600s. To overcome the design constraints due to the
surrounding buildings, Bernini created a trapezoid plaza. The elliptical open square is surrounded by 284
13-meter high Doric colonnades, four in a row. The floor is paved with cobbled stones divided by limestone
obelisks with zodiac signs too look like a giant sun dial. A red porphyry stone marks the spot where Pope
John Paul was shot in 1981. An obelisk from ancient Egypt stands in the center of the plaza. Two fountains
stand on either side in the papal courtyard. The large scale of the square was intended to awe the people
who gather to the listen to the pope’s address from the Vatican Palace. Today, the square inspires feelings of
reverence and inner peace.

09:30 The Colosseum / Colosseum

Visit Duration: 2 hours
The construction of the amphitheater began in 71 AD and was complete by 80 AD under the reign of Emperor
Titus. The Colosseum was used to stage gladiator fights, bull fights, chariot races, and various other events
for public entertainment. Naval battles were enacted with stage effects. Staged hunts used live animals;
convicts were often fed to the animals. Rome had a class system, and there were 5 levels of seating
according to social status. The Colosseum was active till 404 when Theodosius, the Christian Orthodox
emperor banned paganism and other customs. Then Visigoths sacked Rome and the amphitheater fell into
disarray, and later, pieces were taken for use in new structures. Repairs followed, but so did earthquakes and
more sackings. The Colosseum was eventually neglected and gradually dismantled stone by stone. Tourists
flock to the ruins in thousands, and there is also a museum on an upper floor. The Colosseum was recently
selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

11:50 Trevi Fountain

Visit Duration: 1 hour
1.6 KM, 20 minutes walking from The Colosseum
By the 4th century, there were 1352 fountains in Rome. Built circa 1743, Fontana di Trevi is the largest
baroque fountain ever built. The Trevi district of Rome lies at the junction of three roads, and that’s where the
name comes from. The fountain is also the site of the terminal of Aqua Virgo, the aqueduct, which was built in
the reign of Emperor Augustus in 19 BC. In the Renaissance, the popes began restoring aqueduct fountain.
The even relocated and reoriented it. A contest was help to design the present fountain, which was won by
Nicola Salvi. After water began flowing, Guiseppe Pannini started decorating the fountain; Bracci sculpted the
‘Ocean’s Triumph’ according to Salvi’s original design. The Ocean figure stands in a chariot pulled by two
horses with Tritons riding each at the highest point of the fountain. The Ocean figure is flanked by the statue
of Abundance, and the statue of Health on the right. Over both the statues are reliefs of Marcus Agrippa
supervising the construction of the original aqueduct. Money thrown into the fountain is used for maintenance. Address: Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Rome

13:00 The Pantheon / Pantheon

Visit Duration: 1 hour
0.6 KM, 8 minutes walking from Trevi Fountain
The Pantheon is a temple to all the Roman Gods; hence the name. It was commissioned by Emperor Hadrian
between 118 AD and 125 AD. The Pantheon replaced Marcus Agrippa’s temple, which was destroyed in a
fire. The architecture of the Pantheon was not like other Roman temples and historians differ as to the
purpose of the temple. The façade has a triangular pediment, which could have featured sculpted scenes of
battles, etc. It is supported by columns of three rows, which lead to the portico at the front. The original
geometric marble floor still exists, but the marble veneer on the walls was added later. The main architectural
attraction is the dome, supported by a series to arches. If the dome were to flip, it would exactly cover the
Rotunda. The mathematical skills and symmetry, with which the Pantheon was built has been admired by
architectures and artists for centuries.

The Giardino Zoologico di Roma covers 42 acres and is located on the Villa Borghese Estate. The gardens
are home to 1114 animals represents 222 species. The zoo was created in 1908 specifically for exotic
creatures to entertain and amuse the Roman people. It opened to the public in 1911. The zoo layout and
concept was modeled on a zoo in Hamburg and designed by the same designer, Carl Hagenback. Instead of
having the animals behind bars and in cages they were put into dug out pits or surrounded by moats and
allowed plenty of space to move around as if in their natural environment. In 1935 Raffaele De Vico undertook
to create two new areas in the zoo, the aviary and the reptile house.
