Dear Parents,

As the summer vacation approaches, we wanted to take this opportunity to inform you about a
special project that we have planned for our students. We believe that engaging in community
service is not only a meaningful way to spend their free time but also an excellent opportunity for
them to learn valuable life skills and make a positive impact on the community.

During the summer break, we are assigning community service as a part of the students' vacation
homework. We believe that participating in community service will not only allow them to give
back but also help them grow as responsible and compassionate individuals. Here are some details
about the project:

Duration: The community service project will span the entire duration of the summer vacation.
We encourage students to allocate a portion of their time to contribute to the betterment of the
community.

Types of Service: Students have the freedom to choose the type of community service they would
like to engage in, based on their interests, skills, and age-appropriate opportunities. They can
consider volunteering at local charities, assisting at animal shelters, organizing donation drives,
participating in environmental clean-up activities, teaching under privileged schools or any other
service that aligns with their passion.

Documentation: It is important for students to document their community service activities to

share their experiences and accomplishments. We request that students maintain a journal or record
of their service hours, tasks performed, and any reflections or insights they may have gained during
their service. A certificate issued by the respective institute MUST be submitted to the school
as part of your holidays homework in order to be awarded a grade in your first sessional.

Parental Guidance: We encourage parents to support and guide their children in selecting suitable
community service opportunities. Please ensure that the activities are safe, age-appropriate, and
aligned with the values and goals of our school and community.
We kindly request that you discuss the community service project with your child and assist them
in finding suitable opportunities. If you need any assistance or have any questions regarding this

Once you are back from the Summer Break, you will be quizzed on the following book
to evaluate your reading skills. The quiz will comprise of at least 2 rounds. Let’s begin!
i. Reading: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body! Along with enjoying the holidays, it is important to
do some mental exercises as well in order to keep your brain healthy and active.

Spend your holidays reading and learning about the exciting world of Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone (Book 1). A synopsis is given below:

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far
above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to catch a dragon, and has never worn a
cloak of invisibility. All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle,
and their abominable son, Dudley, a great big swollen spoiled bully.
Harry's room is in a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven
years. But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger. The letter
is an invitation to an incredible place that Harry will find unforgettable. For it is at Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that Harry finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic in
everything from classes to meals, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him if he can survive
the encounter.

Below, you will find some fun post reading activities that will ensure your learning and will help you in
preparing well for the Quiz on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

ii. The Vocabulary Bank

Take some A4 size sheets or chart papers (coloured or plain) and create a small booklet of your
very own vocabulary bank while reading the book.

Make a table on the booklet with two columns. In one column, write down the words that
J.K. Rowling created for her book for example, Quidditich. Use the other column to record
real words that you are unfamiliar with and find out their meanings as well.

Include at least 30 words in the booklet.

 iii. Presentation

Wave your wand boys! It is time to create a fun-filled presentation on the entire book. It
will not be created by magic of course! ☺
Now that you have read the entire book, use MS PowerPoint or Prezi to make a presentation
outlining a few details about the author, the themes, characters and the plot of the book. Make
sure your presentation includes more pictures. You may also add videos and sound effects to
make it more dramatic.
