CEng 3201 – Geometric Design of Highways

Mini Project on Route Selection and Geometric Design

A map showing the topographic and physical features of the region in the localities of two
towns A and B is attached to prepare the preliminary design of a primary road connecting the
two towns (linking centres of national importance). The estimated AADT, which will be
using the proposed A-B & C-D roads and the AADT values of vehicles listed below as per
your groups. There is an existing two-way two lane
highway in the area crossing the proposed road.

Determine the location and alignment of the proposed road. Make a detailed design of road
A-B. Prepare a set of working drawings including:

1. A detailed plan and profile (with super-elevation and widening details) for road A-B,
2. Cross-sections typical for construction and earth work computations of the new road,
3. Mass-haul diagram showing the movements of the earth work.

❖ Use the ERA MANUAL 2013 table for reaction time and coefficients of lateral
friction & for SSD in your design. (for checking sight distance requirment)
