1. What is the importance of understanding the self – subject?

According to the PDF that I’ve read…

Understanding the Self is a fundamental course in the General Education

Curriculum for tertiary education. It is designed to help the students
understand the nature of identity including factors that influence and
shape personal identity.

Issues on self and identity are among the most critical for young in today's
fast paced-world. Therefore, this course is designed to help students develop a
more critical and reflective attitude when exploring the problems and
concerns of oneself and of their identity in order to understand themselves better
and more adequately. It emphasizes the integration of students' personal daily
experiences with their classroom learning experiences to encourage them to
improve for a better quality of life.
In fact, self-awareness is one of the bases for change, growth and all the
personal development that we seek. When we have a strong image of ourselves,
we can understand our reactions, we able to interpret the reactions of others, and
recognize areas where we could use positive development.

2. How do you know / discover yourself?

Life can be confusing and full of beautiful little surprises that symbolize
opportunities that slip through our fingers. Being authentic and genuine is the
most meaningful thing you can do in your life. It will make things easier and save
you so much time trying to live up to other people’s expectations to you.
Throughout life, we start to change as we age. I’m not just talking about the
physical change but also in mental change, and more about who your soul is,
how we think, what our views in life, what we like to do for fun, who we want to
hang out with, what foods we like, what we want to do with our life, and many
more. Definitely, all of these things make up who you are.
Sometimes what I think is I want to ends up with that minds changing. This
can be so confusing. Perhaps a time when I start questioning myself. There’s a
chance where I need to take the opportunity to see what’s important to me and
what I’ve value the most. That is a time to find myself. It’s a time where I
enjoyed myself being alone, learn to be comfortable in my own skin, learn
to be contented on what I have right now and learn to love myself of course.
True self-discovery happens when you stop searching for what other
people think about you and start discovering what makes you tick. Being true to
yourself doesn't require conforming to societal norms, but it does require
questioning what you're taught.
Therefore, discovering myself and knowing who really I am gives me a
new perspective and is important as I grow and find my purpose in life. There is
always room for learning new things and exploring new places. As I enter the
different stages of life has to offer, I must accept all the changes happens to me.
“It is all about the journey and finding the best things in life to fulfill
yourself!”

3. Do you think it is important to understand the self? Why?

Definitely YES, to know yourself is your first priority!

How can you realistically set goals, go about life and have successful
relationships if you don't know who you are or what you want? You really
can't. In fact, not knowing yourself creates confusion and wasted time in
unforeseen situations. We tend to underestimate the importance of knowing
ourselves. Many of us go through every day reacting to events and simply getting
through them instead of making conscious decisions based on who we are and
what we want.
When we don't know where we are headed it's hard to set goals, get
motivated and determine the best course of action. Before we can do any of
these things we must establish who we are.

Aside from that, I know most of us heard or even read the famous Ancient
Greek aphorism, “know thyself.” It is the dictum which appeared on the front of
the temple in Delphi. Why that dictum is really important? It simply means
knowing one’s character can one be aware of one’s limitations and avoid likening
oneself to the gods. To be specific, it is only by knowing one’s character that one
can try and improve from a moral point of view, or make the right decisions in
one’s life.
Therefore, understanding your whole self is really much important for
who continuously living and exploring this modern world that full of uncertainties
and mysteries. Knowing yourself deeply is able you to experience yourself as
unique and separate individuals. Also, you are then empowered to make
changes and to build on your areas of strength as well as identify areas where
you would like to make improvements. "There's always room for improvement" as
what saying goes by.
In other words, deeply knowing who you are is not just learning your
favorite color, food, or subject. It's all about creating a ways to know,
appreciate and accept your whole and true self.
