Lesson plan for grade 9 & 10 Drama

Unit 1: Physical Theatre

● Introduction to physical theatre, including movement, gesture, and physicality


● Exploration of different techniques for creating and developing physical
performances, including Laban and Viewpoints
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to create and perform a
physical theatre piece
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Unit 2: Shakespeare

● Introduction to Shakespeare, including the history and influence of Elizabethan


theatre
● Exploration of different approaches to performing Shakespeare, including text
analysis and interpretation
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to perform a scene from a
Shakespeare play
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Unit 3: Theatre of the Absurd

● Introduction to the Theatre of the Absurd, including the work of playwrights such
as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter
● Exploration of different themes and techniques used in the Theatre of the
Absurd, including language, repetition, and existentialism
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to create and perform an
original piece of Theatre of the Absurd
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Unit 4: Applied Theatre

● Introduction to Applied Theatre, including the use of theatre for social and
political change
● Exploration of different approaches to Applied Theatre, including Theatre in
Education and Theatre for Development
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to create and perform an
Applied Theatre piece on a social issue of their choice
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity
Unit 5: Devising Theatre

● Introduction to devising theatre, including collaboration, improvisation, and script


development
● Exploration of different techniques for devising theatre, including physical theatre
and multimedia
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to devise and perform an
original piece of theatre
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Unit 6: Theatre History

● Introduction to theatre history, including the evolution of theatrical styles and


traditions
● Exploration of different periods of theatre history, including Renaissance,
Restoration, and Modernism
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to perform a scene from a
play from a specific period of theatre history
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Unit 7: Directing Theatre

● Introduction to directing theatre, including the role of the director in theatrical


production
● Exploration of different approaches to directing theatre, including collaboration
with actors, designers, and technicians
● Creative activity: students will work in small groups to direct and perform a scene
from a play
● Reflection and discussion on the process and outcomes of the activity

Assessment:

● Formative assessment will take place throughout the year and will include self-
assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment.
● Summative assessment will take place at the end of each unit and will include a
written reflection and a performance assessment based on the IB criteria.
● Students will be encouraged to reflect on their learning and growth throughout
the year and set personal goals for improvement.
● Students will be expected to participate fully in all activities, contribute to group
work, and demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and skills taught in
each unit.
