CHAPTER 01

INTRODUCTION

9
1.1 Introduction

Internship is one of the crucial parts for a student of undergraduate program. It is the time when a student
gets the opportunity to engage with the actual work environment and its methods after a four year long
training session under the university. It is more useful for the students from the Economics background
because in our profession we need practical experience to modes and operation of different organizations.

As an Economics & Banking major student, I always wanted to start my professional career from an
organization which is directly associated with Economics & Banking. Banking sector is the sector which
is directly related to our economy, so I decided to complete my internship in Social Islami Bank Limited
(SIBL) throughout the period of my internship; I had been working in Investment sector. Under internship
program each student has to prepare a report on a particular topic related with the organization .On the
basis of my practical experience as well as theoretical knowledge. I have completed the report on
Performance Analysis of Mode–wise Investment of Social Islami Bank Ltd.-A study on Muradpur
Branch, Chattogram

1.2 Objectives Of The Study

The main objective is to analysis the performance of sector-wise investment of Social Islami Bank Ltd a
study on Muradpur Branch. To achieve the main objective, the study covers the following specific
objectives:

To highlight an overview of SIBL.

To analyze the performance of Investment modes of the selected branch.

10
To identify the factors those hinders in the performance of the modes of investment of SIBL and
provide the corrective measures to overcome those.

1.3 Methodology Of The Study

The study is performed based on the information extracted from different sources collected by using a
specific methodology. This report is theoretical in nature.

1.3.1 Data Collection

This report has been prepared mainly on the basis of secondary data. But primary as well as the secondary
form of information is being used for preparing the report. The details of these sources are highlighted
below:

1.3.2Sources of Primary Data

Practical work exposures from the different desks of various departments of the
branch covered.
Informal conversation with the officers concerned of the branch.
Observation of the working procedure while working in SIBL.
Face to face interview with the clients.

1.3.3 Sources of Secondary Data

Different procedure manual' published by Social Islami Bank limited.

Annual Report of Social Islami Bank limited.

11
Audit reports
Research paper, Newspapers and Journals.
Different circular issued by Head Office of SIBL & Bangladesh Bank.

1.4 Scope Of The Study

Professional knowledge is required for smooth functioning of banking activities. This is a golden
opportunity for me to get myself familiarized with banking environment. To attain my main objective I
work in all departments by rotation by giving emphasis on Investment Department. This study is based on
theoretical and practical analysis.

The study will focus on the following areas:

The kinds of investment facilities extended by Social Islami Bank Limited

General Procedure for getting different kinds of investment facilities → Different kinds of
projects that appraised at SIBL.
Comparing between the investment practices by Social Islami Bank Limited and the guideline
provided by Bangladesh Bank.

Each of the above areas is critically analyzed in order to determine the efficiency of Social Islami Bank
Limited, Muradpur Branch, Chattogram

1.5 Limitations Of The Report

From the beginning to end, the study has been conducted with the intention of making it as a complete
and truthful one. However many problems appeared in the way of conducting the study. During the study,
it was not possible to visit the whole area covered by the bank although the financial statement and other
information regarding the study have been considered. As a result I had to be dependent on whatever
information I could acquire by talking to the employees of SIBL and the files I could go through. The
study considers following limitations:

12
The bank was a busy one having heavy rush of people, whom officers need to deal with. So the
allocation of time for an internship program is very much tough
Lack of collections of elaborate data due to the privacy of the bank.
Lack of in-debt knowledge and analytical ability for writing such report.
The time period for the study was too short.
Another limitation of this report is banks policy of not disclosing some data and information.
Lack of useful website of the Bank
This Investment Methods might not be the same to other branch of the same Bank

13

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF MODE-WISE INVESTMENT OF SIBL

MURADPUR BRANCH

20
3.1. Investment Performance

Investment performance is the return on an investment portfolio. The investment portfolio can contain
single asset or multiple assets. The investment performance is measured over a specific period of time and
in a specific currency. Investors often distinguish different types of return. One is the distinction between
the total return and the price return, where the former takes into account income (interest and dividends),
where as the latter only takes into account capital appreciation.

Another distinction is between net and gross return. The pure net return to the investor is the return net of
all fees, expenses, and taxes, where as the pure gross return is the return before all fees, expenses, and
taxes. Various variations between these two extremes exist. Which return one looks at depends on what is
trying to measure. For example, if one wishes to measure the ability of an investment manager to add
value, then the return net of transaction expenses, but gross of all other fees, expenses and taxes is an
appropriate measure to look at since fees, expenses and taxes other than transaction expenses are often
outside the control of the investment manager. Another important distinction is between the money-
weighted return and the time weighted return. The former is appropriate if the manager determines the
timing of inflows in or outflows from the portfolio. The latter is appropriate when the manager is not
responsible for the timing of cash inflows into and cash outflows from the portfolio.

FINDINGS, RECOMMENDATIONS

& CONCLUSION

39
4.1 Findings

It is a quite tough job to find out and analyze overall banking performance of any bank specially
investment sector with in a very short period of three months time. In spite of many limitations like
shortage of time, Covid situation I have tried to summarize the key factors like basic strength and
problems of the Social Islami Bank Limited. The findings I have got through my study are shown as
follows:

SIBL has much more Investment on HPSM mood compare to Bai-Muazzal & Quard
Investment on NF Baim(SME)Installment -M sector decreased highly over the years
Investment on Bai-Muazzal(Micro Ent Revol) decreased more than any other sector
The investment of HPSM(Consumer Finance) Housing sector continuously decreased over the
years
HPSM(Consumer Finance)Household's investment growth rate continuously going towards
downward direction
HPSM(Consumer Finance)Household-Staff's investment has a poor amount of investment over
the years
The Branch has a lower and decreasing rate on Quard Against MTD investment
The Sample branch have a poor investment overall all sectors special on Bai-Muazzal & Quard

4.2Recomendations

Social Islami bank Limited is one of the renowned, well established, profits earning and leading private
Islami bank in Bangladesh. I feel myself lucky that I got the chance to complete my short time
experience in the bank in comparison with hard and complex banking system. However, on the basis of
my knowledge and a short period of experience I would like to recommend the following suggestions to
overcome the above mentioned problems:

SIBL should try to increase its investment on Bai-Muazzal and Quard modes like as its HPSM
investment
Investment on NF Baim(SME)Installment-M sector should increased by the bank and should try
to maintain the growth rate on positive radar as well
Bai-Muazzal(Micro Ent Revol) is one of the lowest invested sector, so SIBL should give a extra
attention to this sector and should increase the investment amount more and more
The investment of HPSM(Consumer Finance)Housing sector is not satisfying, the investment
should be increased
They should give more emphasis to increase its investment in HPSM(Consumer
Finance)Household
HPSM(Consumer Finance)Household –Staff’s investment rate should be increased
Investment on Quard against MTD should also be increased
Overall in every moods the performance of investment of SIBL is very poor they should take
necessary step to increase the investment on these modes
The facilities for the loan receiver should be increased
Social Islami Bank Limited, Muradpur Branch, should try to attract more potential and Influential
customers by introducing several facilities to open and transaction in current and savings
accounts.

4.3Conclusion

The importance of sustaining and improving bank performance is increasing day by day. Particularly in
an environment which is characterized by rapidly flourishing technology and its growing application to
banking, tremendous competition, product development, shift in marketing strategy, deregulation &
globalization on the one hand, and escalation in the number of bank failures accompanied by mergers and
mega mergers on the contrary. In order to keep abreast with the prevailing market scenario SIBL has
already strengthen its position in the industry. The Bank has grown well in its 26th year of business,
expanded its coverage of financial products and customer segments and enhanced its service capabilities
across multiple channels. The result achieved by the Bank reflects that it claimed to even higher
operational height despite stiff competition.

To be a leading private sector bank, SIBL. has to apply some new dimensions in its customer satisfaction
level & its products and services. Otherwise, it would be quite hard for them to keep their business
position in competitive market industry. Because of without pure satisfaction from the customers no one
can last longer in the market. Existing customers hope better future of SIBL by providing best services.

In the end I can say it was a lifetime achievement for me to work in Social Islami bank Ltd and gather
knowledge. Social Islami Bank Ltd as an organization is trying to establish their service and they can
improve their service through low price service with skilled service provider. The level of satisfaction
among the customers and employees can go up by the dedicated steps of organization and it is necessary.
