Hi everyone! My name’s Rick, and I want to tell you about my dog Goldie! Well, he’s not just my dog – he
belongs to our whole family. But I spotted him amongst all the other puppies in the pet shop – so that
made it feel as if he was mine. My brothers named him, and they love him too. But I’m the one who
walks him now because I’ve got more time than my brothers.
As a puppy, Goldie cried a lot at night when we first brought him home, so I often spent the night
sleeping next to his basket! And he tried to eat absolutely everything in the house – my trainers,
mum’s shoes, even the furniture!
Then when he grew a bit bigger and stronger, he got a bit calmer. He walked along beside me,
instead of pulling me along the road. He even came back when I called him. And he wasn’t so afraid
of the traffic, either. We certainly enjoyed our walks together more.
Then about a year ago, I broke my leg – and Goldie was amazing! He just understood that I couldn’t
walk with him. So he just sat quietly with me at home, and kept me company, when Dad wasn’t out
with him for a short run. And when I couldn’t reach down to take my socks off, he helped me! He just
got hold of one end and pulled! Mum was pleased that Goldie was so helpful!
Goldie’s a great guard dog too. He’s a very friendly dog, so he doesn’t bark when we come home. He
just jumps out of his basket and is pleased to see us! But if anyone else comes to the door, he makes
a lot of noise! He sometimes barks late at night, too, if he hears a noise - but it’s probably just cats
outside in the garden!
Now Mum has a job, so there isn’t anyone in the house during the day to stay with Goldie. We think
he’d be very bored if he stayed alone all day. So Dad takes him to day care for dogs. He spends all
day there, playing with other dogs and going for walks. He loves it – and he’s absolutely exhausted
when he comes home!

___

A Ralph
Often in my town, if one of my friends has a birthday, their parents find a special place to have it. It
could be on the beach or in their garden. Or sometimes they hire somewhere like a swimming pool or a
room in a sports centre, so that we can do sport. That’s nice – but I like the smaller parties too. There
are usually great things to eat, like pizza or burgers – things that everyone likes. The main thing is that
the person who’s having their birthday has a really good time – and we all work hard to make that
happen.
B Dennis
Most of my friends prefer to have everyone at their house for their birthdays. That means we can just
listen to music, eat our favourite foods, and sit and chat. Their parents usually organise it all, and then
leave an older brother or sister in charge, watching TV! And if it’s during the summer, we can be
outside, which is better because then we can have barbecues in the garden! We all try to take a present
that our friend really wants. It doesn’t need to be something expensive. It just shows that we thought
about them on their special day.
C Christopher
My friends usually like to meet everyone in a favourite cafe and have a meal together for their
birthdays. Parents and older brothers and sisters come too, and it’s a lovely atmosphere. We all give
each other something special as a present – sometimes people make things themselves, which I think is
actually better than buying a present from a shop because your friend will probably keep the thing you
made for a very long time. I always look forward to other people’s parties – and my own, of course!

READING B
3 Read the texts about how three different
people celebrate their friends’ birthdays. For
each question, choose A, B or C.
Which person …?

1 wanted a different kind of party from that of her

friends?
2 explains how the celebration shows the friends’
feelings towards the birthday person?
3 doesn’t mind spending whatever money she’s got
on her friends.
4 mentions the refreshments she’s offered at her
friends’ house?
5 explains that not everyone she knows wants the
same kind of celebration?
6 helped to arrange parties that her friends weren’t
expecting?
7 enjoys meeting different people at the friends’
homes on birthdays?

A Michaela
If one of my friends has a birthday, the rest of us
save our money and then go into town to buy
some very special presents. Everyone has a
different idea about what to buy, so it takes time
to decide! Then, depending on whether it’s a
weekend or a school day, we all go to our
friend’s house to give them their presents.
There’s usually cake and lemonade for us! I think
it’s really good to celebrate friends’ birthdays – it
shows them how important they are to the rest of
us.
B Andrea
Sometimes my friends don’t want a really big
party, so their parents might organise a small
party for them at home, and we’re all invited! It’s
great, as we get to dress up in special clothes and
all spend some time together, and we meet their
family, too. All our birthdays are during the
summer, which is great, because then we can eat
in the garden! And we choose the nicest presents
we can afford, too. It’s great – and our friend
always enjoys their special day!
C Samantha
Last year, all my friends wanted surprise parties. So I helped to organise them all, and that
was exciting. We decorated our friends’ houses while they were out – their parents helped
with that – and then when they came home, we were all waiting with food and presents.
Lots of people came and that meant a lot to the person celebrating their birthday. I chose not
to have a surprise party, though – I just wanted to have a meal in town with a small group of
close friends.
