Summative Assessment

Learning objective: After researching a planet that students choose, they will be
able to write an informative piece that introduces the topic, uses facts and
definitions to expand points, and includes a concluding statement with 70%
accuracy.

Explanation of assessment: For this summative assessment, students will be given

a wide range of research options and a list of planets available to use. They will
then research whichever planet they are most interested in and begin to write an
informative writing piece based off of this planet. They will go through the writing
process and first begin with prewriting, then drafting, revising/editing, and finally
creating a final draft that includes the topic, uses facts and definitions to expand
points, and includes a concluding statement.

Rationale (alignment to objective): In this assessment students used the writing

process to create an informative writing piece about a plant that they chose to
research. Their informative writing must include introducing the topic, using facts
and definitions to expand their points, and including a concluding statement.

Rubric Description: The informational writing rubric was used to assess the
students on a summative assessment, which includes five areas of focus labeled,
focus, organization, sequence, spelling, and closing. The students can either
receive a four, three, two, or one in each area of focus based on their level of work
and they can earn up to twenty points depending on what they score in each box.
The teacher will leave feedback on the bottom of each student’s rubric of what
their goal should be for the next writing piece.
Differentiated Rubric: This differentiated scoring guide was used to assess
struggling student or those on IEPs on the summative assessment, which includes
three areas of focus labeled effort, content, and conventions. The students can
either receive a four, three, two, or one in each area of focus based on their level
of work and they can earn up to twenty points depending on what they score in
each box. The teacher will leave feedback on the bottom of each student’s rubric
of what their goal should be for the next writing piece.
