igs & fixtures for manufacturing, assembly line equipment parts in engineering-
grade plastics, functional mechanical prototypes, and batches of custom-
designed replacement parts – all printed in your own facility, saving thousands of
dollars and days or weeks of time over traditional manufacturing. This is the goal of
industrial fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing.

Industrial 3D printers today are becoming standard equipment at automakers and

manufacturers, and among heavy industry, aerospace, and healthcare. These
machines are producing on-demand custom and unique parts in lightweight and
durable engineering polymers (carbon-fiber nylon, Ultem, PEEK), often replacing metal
parts, such as milled aluminum or stainless steel.

Industrial FDMs enjoy worldwide adoption, but challenges limiting their application
include ease of use and quality control. For the most effective workflow, shop-floor
workers should be able to easily operate these machines with reliable results, while
engineers should have all the data they need about printed parts and printer status at
their fingertips. You shouldn’t have to hire a 3D printing engineer to manage your

industrial 3D printing and the results should be consistent and repeatable. This is what
the latest innovations in industrial FDM 3D printers are working toward with more
automation, more sensors, and more sophisticated software for more hands-off 3D
printing and overall confidence in the process.

Quality Assurance Software

Three of the newest FDMs are great examples of the new software-heavy approach.
The Stratasys F3300, Aon3D Hylo, and Markforged FX10, all debuted last month and all
boast new sensors and software to take a lot of the labor and time out of 3D printing.

Common features include machine-vision laser scanners that scan the print as it’s
printing and compares it to the digital model so you know the second something has
gone off or you get a confirmation that the part and all of it’s internal features, were
printed to spec. There are also filament sensors that can not only detect which material ADVERTISEMENT

is loaded and when it runs out, but automatically switch to a fresh spool. Sensors also
monitor the health of the machine and alert you to maintenance before it becomes an
issue sidelining the machine. All these tools, coupled with workflow features tracking
what part is printed where and by whom, are what printer makers are calling the next-
generation of FDM.

Printer maker MiniFactory has offered real-time monitoring software called Aarni for a
while now. It also enables layer-by-layer 3D printing quality assurance and generates a
manufacturing document that summarizes the entire printing process.

For the most part, however, software- and sensor-enabled part quality assurance is a
developing technology. With the advent of newer AI, eventually these tools should be
able to compile dozens of datapoints in real-time to make decisions about a printing
part, fix defects before they happen, and optimize printing parameters through a
learning history. There’s a lot of work going on in this field, although much of it is
focused on metal 3D printing processes.

What Makes an FDM Industrial?

The term “industrial” is subjective and we’ll admit, shifting. There are a wider range of
smaller machines under $10K that can deliver dependable carbon-fiber nylon parts, but
industrial FDMs usually go a step beyond this material and typically feature high-
temperature extrusion and consistently heated chambers that can handle polymers
used to replace metal, such as Ultem and PEEK. These hotter machines are also
getting bigger, with a better ability to avoid warping in larger parts.

Not every printer in this collection offers all of the key industrial features below, but
each was built, according to their manufacturers, to produce dependable, reliable,
factory tools and durable replacement parts.

Industrial FDMs feature:

• Large-enough volume to enable you to print large pieces or dozens of smaller

parts (300+ mm)

• Extruder temperature upwards of 325ºC to print reliably with engineering-grade

https://all3dp.com/1/best-industrial-3d-printers-fdm/[12/02/2024 13:26:30]

filaments, such as PEEK, Ultem, and carbon-fiber-infused polymers

• Heated build chamber that can hold a consistent temperature (at least 80ºC) for
long durations to prevent part warping or cracking

• Automation of process variables for consistency and less manual calibration

• 24/7 operation enabled by remote operation, a cloud-based workflow
management, and embedded cameras

• Quality assurance software provides verification through real-time print

monitoring that a part was printed as intended

The quality and specific properties of the parts you need produced are one of your
primary criterion for selecting an industrial FDM, but don’t overlook ease of use.
Consider how automated your machine is, how it verifies part builds, and offers
features to save you time and work. In fact, as noted above, a printer’s software is
becoming one of the main differentiating features in FDM options.

Also consider if you need a machine certified for use in a regulated medical setting, one
that filters out harmful chemical emissions from the print process, one that fits through
a standard doorframe, or one that comes with staff training and regular support.
Consider how long it takes the printer to heat up before printing can begin, how much
time a print needs to cool, and post-processing and finishing, since these can affect
your shop’s overall efficiency.

Everything You Need to Know

The Best Carbon Fiber 3D Printers of 2023

Of course, FDM 3D printers are not the only ones that are industrial. Other technologies,
including polymer powder bed methods, such as selective laser sintering (SLS)
and binder jetting also produce industrial components, and you can read about these in
our other guides. Here, however, we focus on FDM because it is often the entry printer
for industry, where 3D printing proves itself as a business solution.

3D printer manufacturer 3DGence designed the Industry F421 to print high-

performance polymers, like PEEK, Ultem, ASA, and carbon fiber PC, with an
interchangeable printing module approach. You can swap the nozzle modules
depending on which engineering-grade material you want to use. Each module is
customized to a specific group of materials in order to optimize the printing process,

the company says. Each module’s internal memory saves the calibration profile, which
saves time when switching materials.

Another feature of the F421 is its dual-extrusion capability to print complicated

geometries using soluble support filaments and the “Smart Material Manager”, a
system that recognizes the material you’re using, can automatically load it and has a
flow control sensor. It also can automatically change spools of filament when a spool
runs out and keeps your materials dry and warmed up ready to print. The F421 also
has an air filtration system.

The printer uses 3DGence Slicer 4.0 software and you can manage your prints, check
the printing status, schedule maintenance remotely via the 3DGence Cloud.

The FX10 FDM from Markforged (Source: Markforged)

The brand new (Nov. 2023) FX10 from Markforged is an industrial FDM 3D printer to
tackle the evolving challenges of factory-floor part fabrication, the company says. It
offers faster speed and more automated features than the company’s seven other
carbon-fiber nylon 3D printers.

On the FX10, multiple sensors are placed throughout the machine, including positional
sensors, extrusion system sensors, sensors for nozzle touchoffs, thermal sensors, and

others. These enable faster and more targeted maintenance to keep the machine
running smoothly.

The key feature of this monitoring system is the new Vision Module, which is not
intended to be used by operators to manually view the build chamber — the FX10 has
another camera mounted in the top corner of the gantry for that — instead, it’s meant to
capture high-resolution images that power a “Device Health Check ” utility to ensure the
printer is performing up to standards. Of course, for government and aerospace
customers who cannot have a camera on their machine, it can be disabled.

For now, the FX10 only prints with Onyx, Markforged’s proprietary nylon material and
continuous carbon fiber, but this new machine was explicitly designed to be extensible,
which means that new print heads, modes, materials, and features will be available
going forward.

Quality Assurance

Markforged’s Eiger OS software includes optional subscriptions to the Digital Forge

platforms, enabling simulation and inspection modules.

With Inspection, the FX10’s laser scanning ability scans your parts as they print,
connecting part design, production, and quality control. Inspection-enabled devices
detect when a print has failed and automatically pauses the print for user review. You
can then download customizable scan reports with clear pass/fail analysis. Simulation
is another optional piece of software from the acquisition and integration of Teton
Simulation in 2022, that helps users verify part performance before printing begins.

Another new printer making this list is the Apium P400. Setting this high-temperature
FDM apart from the crowd is its adaptive zone heating system. With heaters placed on
the extruders, Apium says it has solved the problem of inconsistent heat in the build
chamber, which can lead to warping and print failures especially in large parts. This
heat strategy also eliminates the heating-up time and energy-consuming heating and
cooling of the entire build volume.

The P400 is an open-material machine and features independent dual extruders so you
can print two separate materials at the same time ensuring that each has the specific
heat required for that material. There are linear rails and servo motors, as you’d expect,
and an integrated filament dryer, four filament bays, and sensors monitoring essential
processes and machine condition.

Apium says the P400 extendable the future integration of new tools is planned.
Although there’s no quality assurance, all important parameters of a print process are
generated into a PDF.

We hate to reprint a company’s marketing material here but we think Aon3D hit the nail
on the head, as far as where industrial FDMs are going with this statement about its
latest printer: “We believe next generation software and smart hardware are key to
unlocking and scaling additive manufacturing adoption, enabling users to create
functional parts in the world’s most advanced polymers with just a few clicks.”

In November 2023, Aon3D launched its new flagship FDM, Hylo powered by new
“machine learning-driven software” called Basis that enables you to slice, simulate,
optimize, then print.

Hylo, with dual independent extruders, is designed for a range of applications including
tooling, jigs and fixtures, end-use parts, and rapid prototyping using high-performance
thermoplastics. It features an open-material environment, so it’s compatible with a wide
range of material brands, including Solvay, Sabic, DSM, Infinite Material Solutions, and
others, and comes with validated print profiles for them.

In addition to open materials, there’s open parameters so you can fine tune various
processes, temperatures, and motion settings.

Hylo replaces the company’s M2 and M2+ machines.

Aon3D’s Basis software on the Hylo FDM 3D printer slices then simulates the build of your part so you can make
optimizations before printing (Source: Aon3D)

Quality Assurance

The Hylo has more than 25 integrated sensors for automated calibration, process
control, and monitoring the print process to validate parts as they print. After printing,
you can review the various data points of your as-printed part with its digital twin.

Basis also manages and monitors all of your Aon3D printers, projects, users, revisions,
optimizations, and as-printed part data in one user interface.

Aon3D says its software replaces trial and error printing with AI-driven process
simulation and digital file optimization. Basis can simulate the Hylo printing process,
enabling you to identify and correct issues before ever hitting print.

combination and the optimized settings for the 3ntr 3D printer are adopted. In addition,
the Spectral has an automatic material recognition all 3ntr materials.

The Spectral 30 takes filament drying and storage seriously with the Vento filament
drying module equipped with a 600W fan and space for 5-kg reels. The dryer has a
monitor that detects the condensation point and, after the initial trying treatment,
gradually reduces humidity and maintains it at 5%.

If you’re looking for something larger, 3ntr offers the Sequoia, with an impressively large
build volume, 1,200 x 1,100 x 90 mm. The machine offers a heated chamber (to 130°C)
and a high-temp extruder (to 450°C) that’s been redesigned for faster printing, the
company says.

Essentium, just acquired by 3D printer maker Nexa3D in November, offers three

industrial FDM 3D printers. The smallest is the High Speed Extrusion (HSE) 240 HT
Dual Extruder, which features a smaller footprint than it’s other two FDMs to appeal to
small and medium-sized factories and university labs looking to produce smaller-
volume parts and prototypes.

The 240 features automatic filament switching between its four filament drawers to
reduce downtime, creating more parts in a compact environment. Like the Stratasys
F3300, there are no belts or pulleys. The 240 has linear servo motor system.

The Essentium 240 uses convection heating to keep the chamber consistent and up to

185ºC. There’s also an internal chamber camera.

The company’s larger FDMs have dual independent extruders that are actually
independent on both the Y and X axis. This enables the printer to create different parts
at once, such as two sides of a mold. The 280 has inferred energy that’s more tune-able
and accurate, the company says, plus uses less overall energy.

There’s no proprietary software to learn since Essentium partners with Materialise and
Simplify3D for build preparation. Materialise software called Magics can generate
reports from a wide range of print parameters to keep track of builds and ensure
repeatability with fully customizable automatic reports. There’s also an option to
analyze builds using features that detect potential issues.

3D printer maker Roboze wants to help manufactures ditch metal parts in favor of 3D
printed ones in performance polymers suitable to environments where high
temperatures, high chemical resistance, and mechanical properties are required. In fact,
Roboze says it has helped hundreds of companies to change production methods and
replace metals, optimizing time and costs.

Argo 500 has been designed to produce finished parts using engineering-grade
polymers and composites, including their PEEK ceramic material called Helios PEEK
2005. The printer can monitor the material, from moisture control to drying and
preheating, up to the gradual cooling phase of the produced part.

The Argo 500 is equipped with a patented “beltless” system that uses racks and pinions
(instead of belts) thus achieving the mechanical accuracy typical of a machine tool, the
company says.

A host of process variables, including leveling the build plate to extruder calibration and
material change-over are automated. f

If the Argo 500 is just too much machine for you, there’s a smaller version with a few
less features, called the Agro 350.

The Argo 500 is accessible under a subscription plan, rather than buying the machine
outright. Depending on your level of services, updates, and customization, the annual
range is between $89,000 and $119,000.

Roboze offers a proprietary slicing software on the 500 called Prometheus. There are
also sensors and software designed to provide predictive maintenance. The machine’s
OS stores your operations and process parameters for easier repeatability.

Additive manufacturing giant Stratasys produces several industrial FDM 3D printers,

including the new F3300, which it calls its most advanced industrial FDM ever. Its aim
is to replace injection molding with F3300 3D printing.

Just debuted in November 2023, there is still no full spec sheet available, but Stratasys
told All3DP that the F3300 delivers twice the speed and throughput of the F900 (which
isn’t going away). Print speed is up to 500 mm/s with a 270 cubic cm/hour throughput

on the extruder. There are multiple extruders, an automated tool head changer, and
four onboard material dryers. The F3300 features linear motors, more sensors, and
more automation for 24/7 production.

The Stratasys F3300 is aimed a minimizing operational labor requirements. “At a time
when skilled labor is increasingly scarce, the F3300 is purposely designed to allow
virtually anyone to use it with minimal instruction,” the company says.

There’s a generous build volume and, although Stratasys is not releasing an extruder
temperature, the chamber will reach 220ºC and they say the F3300 can print high-
temperature materials including and Ultem. As far as we can tell, you are required to
use only Stratasys brand filament at this time, yet it comes in jumbo-size spools for
less frequent material reloading. The F3300 includes more customer-replaceable
components than other Stratasys systems, cutting down on waiting for field support to
replace the part.

Under the hood you’ll also find new linear motors and linear encoders – the
mechanisms that move and position the print heads – to enable faster and more
precise movement than belts and pulleys. Multiple extruders provide redundancy to
take over if a primary unit faults, avoiding a failed build.

If you’re shop is looking for something smaller, the Stratasys F123CR series provides
an easy-to-print experience, the company says, for advanced materials including
carbon fiber nylon.

Quality Assurance

Integrated GrabCAD Print (slicing software) and Insight software enable you to monitor
the print in real-time. GrabCAD Print enables you to check build file integrity, organize
print queues, and get real-time print status notifications. GrabCAD Print Pro has an
Accuracy Center feature released in July 2023 that takes a scan of your printed part
(using your own off-the-shelf 3D scanner) to align it to your design model, compare the
two, and score the accuracy of the print against the design. If required, the Accuracy
Center can account for warp and curl by replacing the model with a Warp-Adjusted
Model to help you achieve a more accurate part with fewer design iterations.

* Max Print Speed isn’t always the speed you actually get. Printing speed depends on
the material, layer height, temperature, and the shape of the part you’re printing, among
other considerations. These figures for maximum print speed we list here are what the
printer makers provide, but keep in mind that they are relative terms, and it shouldn’t be
a driving factor in your printer selection.
