Networking and Cyber Security Job Roles

• Network Administrator
• Installs and maintains hardware and software, documents diagnosis and resolution of faults, manages
user passwords, security and inventory documentation, ensures the efficient performance of servers,
printers and personal computers, and attends to other operational tasks. May also perform tasks such
as help desk support and user training. (ANZSCO)
• Network Specialist (SFIA), Infrastructure Engineer (APS), Network Operations Specialist (NICE)

• Systems Administrator
• Plans, develops, installs, troubleshoots, maintains and supports an operating system and associated
server hardware, software and databases ensuring optimum system integrity, security, backup and
performance. (ANZSCO, SFIA, NICE)
• Infrastructure Engineer (APS)

• ICT Security Specialist

• Establishes, manages and administers an organisation's ICT security policy and procedures to ensure
preventive and recovery strategies are in place, and minimise the risk of internal and external security
threats. (ANZSCO)
• Cyber Security Analyst (SFIA), Security Architect (APS), Systems Security Analyst (NICE)
COIT20246 ‐ Careers in Networking and Cyber Security

This slide shows three job roles that a graduate specialising in network and cyber
security may be prepared for. The names and descriptions are taken from ANZSCO.
However they may have other names, some examples are also listed. When companies
are recruiting, they will typically use these names or similar ones.

Note there is often overlap between the three roles list. For example, an employee may
act as both a network administrator and a systems administrator. And a network
administrator performs tasks of a ICT security specialist, and an ICT security specialist
performs system admin tasks.

As you progress in your career you may start to specialise, or remain in a general role.
There are many opportunities for graduates with networking and cyber security
background.

COIT20246

NIST NICE Workforce Framework

COIT20246 ‐ Careers in Networking and Cyber Security

We briefly introduce the NIST NICE Workforce framework. While there are other
frameworks and job classifications, one benefit of NICE is that it defines knowledge and
skills in detail. That means a student new to this area (i.e. you) should be able to identify
some of the knowledge/skills expected of job roles defined by NICE. Whereas some of
the other frameworks are not as specific as NICE, and therefore it is harder for new
students to relate to the defined knowledge/skills.

As you progress through your course, the other more general frameworks and
classifications will become more useful for you.

One limitation of NICE is that it focusses on cyber security. While it covers aspects of
network administration and systems administration, there is not as much as in other
frameworks/classifications.

COIT20246

NIST NICE Workforce Framework

• NIST National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE)
• Defines job roles and expected tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities
• SECURELY PROVISION (SP) - Conceptualizes, designs, procures, and/or builds secure
information technology (IT) systems, with responsibility for aspects of system and/or network development.
• OPERATE and MAINTAIN (OM) - Provides the support, administration, and maintenance
necessary to ensure effective and efficient information technology (IT) system performance and security.
• OVERSEE and GOVERN (OV) - Provides leadership, management, direction, or development and
advocacy so the organization may effectively conduct cybersecurity work.
• PROTECT and DEFEND (PR) - Identifies, analyzes, and mitigates threats to internal information
technology (IT) systems and/or networks.
• ANALYZE (AN) - Performs highly-specialized review and evaluation of incoming cybersecurity information
to determine its usefulness for intelligence.
• COLLECT and OPERATE (CO) - Provides specialized denial and deception operations and
collection of cybersecurity information that may be used to develop intelligence.
• INVESTIGATE (IN) - Investigates cybersecurity events or crimes related to information technology
(IT) systems, networks, and digital evidence

• Cyber Security: Cisco CyberOps Associate
• Exam Topics: Security Concepts, Security Monitoring, Host-based Analysis,

• Others:
• CompTIA Network+/Security+, ITIL Foundation, security (ISACA

COIT20246 ‐ Careers in Networking and Cyber Security

These are example/popular entry level certifications that this unit contributes to. Entry‐
level usually does not require any work experience or other certifications. While it is
useful to have entry‐level certifications across multiple areas (e.g. one in networking and
one in security), there is not as much benefit in having multiple entry‐level certifications
in the same area (e.g. multiple entry‐level networking certifications). Once you have an
entry‐level certification, start planning the next level up.

Most of these require a paid exam, usually $100’s or in some cases $1000’s. You may be
able to get discounts or even free certifications as a student, e.g. Microsoft offer free
certifications.

Deploy app resources Azure Resource Manager enables you to repeatedly

deploy your app and have confidence your resources are deployed in a consistent
state. You define the infrastructure and dependencies for your app in a single
declarative template. This template is flexible enough to use for all of your
environments such as test, staging or production. If you create a solution from
the Azure Marketplace, the solution will automatically include a template that you
can use for your app.
Organize resources
Azure Resource Manager makes it easy for you to manage and visualize resources
in your app. You no longer have to deploy parts of your app separately and then
manually stitch them together. You put resources with a common lifecycle into a
resource group that can be deployed or deleted in a single action. You can see

Careers in Networking and Cyber Security 48

which resources are linked by a dependency. You can apply tags to resources to
categorize them for management tasks, such as billing.
Control access to resources
With Azure Resource Manager, you can control who in your organization can
perform actions on the resources. You manage permissions by defining roles and
adding users or groups to the roles. For critical resources, you can apply an explicit
lock that prevents users from deleting or modifying the resource. Azure Resource
Manager logs all user actions so you can audit those actions. For each action, the

Azure Service Health

Azure Service Health is a collection of services that keep you

informed of general Azure status, service status that may
impact you, and specific resource status that is impacting you.

Azure Status: global view of the health of all Azure services

across all Azure regions

Service Health: focused view on only the services and regions

that you’re using. If a service is experiencing a problem in a
region you’re not using, it won’t show up here.

Resource Health: tailored view of your actual Azure

resources. It provides information about the health of your
individual cloud resources
