Topics In my opinion, it is always not easy to make a good and balanced task which equally assess Criteria B, C, and D and it is
time-consuming as comparing making a task which assesses Criterion A ( Knowing and Understanding). Is there any good
Groups website/textbook/resources known to someone? If yes, could you please share them here.

I am trying to come to an agreement with the music teacher in my school about the terminology in the learning objectives.
This will allow us to standardize.
We are having problems agreeing on the differences between knowing and understanding.

Hi Marcela,
Seconding the Collaborative Discussion (CD) done on
Knowing and Understanding,
I would place it as,
1. 'Knowing' is the expertise and skill acquired by an individual from his / her experiences and education.
2. While 'understanding' is a psychological process that requires an individual to think and use concepts to deal
with a person, object, message, or situation.
Hence, Understanding has a deeper level than knowing.

Films as language texts in a Category 3 Extended Essay for Studies in Language and Literature (and as text extracts
for IO analysis)
I would like to clarify how a student could use a film as the foundation for a cat 3 EE (Language and Literature), especially
considering we can use films as non-literary bodies of work now.
For instance, I have thought film adaptations to fall under Literature and Performance EE's up this point. Has this changed or
have I been mistaken?
For original films, would a student's RQ need to focus on the "language" of the film (ie. the screenplay) but also on elements
of film technique? (ie. distance shots, rapid cutting, voice-over, etc).
I have the same question for the Individual Oral (L&L): How best should we be preparing students to analyze a film extract?
For instance, I can see how camera angles and metaphor are both devices used by an author to construct meaning.

For Cat 3 LAL essays using film, students are allowed (and expected to) include analysis of filmic evidence as
well, yes. It is only in Cat 1 or 2 where only the screenplay is considered literary. This was previously not so clearly
explained in the guide -- so if you have an older version, I can see where the confusion has come in --- but the
online version specifies this.
HOWEVER Note that screenplays are now non-literary and so the EE guidance for Cat 1 and Cat 2 will now need
some tweaking to reflect the new course.
