PTR Master of Tennis

Junior Development
A First in USA Coach Education
The PTR Master of Tennis - Junior Development program is the only tennis
coach education program in the US that provides externally based assess-
ment of skills, knowledge and abilities for tennis professionals and coaches
of junior players. The qualification matches the National Standards for Sports
Coaches (NSSC) at the highest level, which is Level 5. These Standards, at
different levels, are used by other sports and education bodies in the United
States and are recognized and endorsed by the United States Olympic Com-
mittee (USOC). The competencies of the program also link to those of the ITF’s
highest award for tennis coaches. The high standards of the program de-
mand high standards of the participants, starting with the requirements for
application and acceptance for this qualification.

The program is only open to PTR members who hold a PTR 10 and Under
and/or 11 to 17 Certification Professional rating and/or a PTR Level 3 Junior
Development certification. The program can be completed in as few as 14
months, although up to a maximum of two years is allowed. The content of
the Master of Tennis - Junior Development program is designed to develop
the coaching behaviors, knowledge and skills needed to progress 4 to17 year old junior club players.

The program consists of 18 different courses, all of which are blended into a unique mix of online and home study, we-
binars and video. The 18 courses are organized into 7 sequential modules. The courses for one module must be completed
and signed off before the next module is available. Courses in the first few modules ensure that the coach has the wide
area of background knowledge necessary for high quality coaching of junior players. Subsequent courses and modules
concentrate on the progression of the background information into the knowledge, practical skills and behaviors neces-
sary to plan and deliver coaching programs and lessons for different groups of junior players, over a period of at least 3
months. These modules thus require the coach to synthesize the knowledge gained and then apply it to the practical
coaching environment of junior players in his or her home club.

The MOT program format has proven successful in taking a full time coaching schedule into consideration and the format
of the program for 2019-2021 will improve on this success. Coaches study at their own pace and in their own time and
so need to alocate time each week to give evidence of their abilities and knowledge on video, in written work, in webinar
discussion, and in work on and off court with their own players. Each coach will be given individual attention and super-
vision online.

Learning materials will be easily accessed through password protected pages on a dedicated InnTier website. Each
coach will be assigned a personal access code, so that work can be accessed and stored for easy reference and sub-
sequent submission at any time. Assessment will be ongoing and each of the 18 courses has competencies which the
coach must meet. ALL 18 courses must be passed successfully for the PTR MOT Junior Development qualification to
be awarded. Each coach is given a maximum of 3 attempts to complete the work for each of the 18 courses. Those who
successfully complete the program will earn the designation of PTR Master of Tennis - Junior Development.
