SYNOPSIS

TOPIC: IoTRec: The IoT Recommender for Smart Parking System

The IoT Recommender (IoTRec) system is introduced as a GDPR-compliant solution for smart
parking systems, developed within the H2020 EU-KR WISE-IoT project framework. Leveraging
IoT technology, particularly parking and traffic sensors, IoTRec offers four primary functions.
Firstly, it assists users in locating available parking spots based on various metrics like proximity
or trustworthiness. Secondly, it recommends optimal routes to the selected parking spot from the
user's current location, considering factors such as congestion or distance. Thirdly, IoTRec provides
real-time updates on parking spot availability in a user-friendly format, organized by areas.
Additionally, it ensures GDPR compliance, operating within a privacy-aware environment.

IoTRec has been integrated into the smart parking use case of the WISE-IoT project and evaluated
by citizens of Santander, Spain, through a prototype. The evaluation results demonstrate high
satisfaction with the system's quality, functionalities, ease of use, and reliability. While initially
tested in Santander, IoTRec's adaptable design makes it suitable for deployment in any IoT-enabled
locality, offering a versatile solution to address parking challenges while respecting user privacy
and regulatory requirements. The system's success lies in its ability to seamlessly combine IoT
technologies with privacy considerations, providing a robust and user-friendly solution for smart
parking management.
