Media Analysis Review
Pre-Test
Class worked in groups to complete analysis of each media piece (video and poster/flyer).
‘Students seemed able to identify purpose, target audience, overt message, covert message, and
could explain if'a piece was effective or not most of the time.
Post Test
This was the first analysis the students completed.
Results ~ more than half of students failed (less than 50%)
Possible Reasons:
1. Diagnostics not as effective at capturing student learning. I tried to vary who I called on
to answer questions, but there were some students who said nothing. Students discussed
answers in groups first before answering questions and that might have masked students
who didn’t actually understand
2. Media analysis was interrupted halfway through (had to leave for 20 minutes to do
reading buddies). Better time management would have avoided this.
Plan
Students will be given another piece of media to analyse after a thorough review of previous
‘media analysis plus more practice analysing if the media piece is effective or not by describing
some of the techniques used. Last question of media analysis will be re-worded to be clearer (ie.,
“Is this an effective media piece? Give 3 reasons to support your answer.”)
Media Analysis I Review
Pre-Test
Class responded better to questions about the effectiveness of the media piece using examples of
techniques used to support their answers. They mostly remembered the four principles of media.
Post Test
Students performed much better than last media test (over 70% passed) with most students
improving or achieving the same mark as last test. This test will be used to boost previous marks
according to AT.Media Analysis 2 Review
Pre-Test
‘Students were very knowledgeable about techniques and could describe how they are used
effectively/ineffectively in the media piece. Some students are starting to demonstrate how the
effectiveness is not affected on how much they themselves like/dislike it, but on what the target
audience as a whole would feel.
Post Test
Results — About 70% of students passed. Most were able to describe 5 techniques used and how
they were used. Most marks were lost by failing to describe how they were used and just listing
techniques they said were effective/ineffective, but not explaining why. Explanations about why
students think the way they do is an ongoing skill that they are having to demonstrate in all
classes (or at least, those observed classes). I believe that those students who did not pass only
did so because this ability to explain themselves was still in the process of being developed.
Plan
In future lesson plans, I will make sure to give students more opportunities to explain
themselves, in both written and spoken forms, to further develop this skill.
