PROCEDURE Date : 08 Maret 2024

1.0 SCOPE OF WORK

This procedure describes the general requirements for trimming elbow from
45⁰ and 90⁰ to any degree for Piping at Mechanical and Piping works.
It should be noted that this document is intended to present Contractor plan
for accomplishing the work but is not intended to provide every detail on how
the work will be executed.
In addition to the information contained in this procedure, Contractor will
carry out fabrication work to meet the requirements of drawings, technical
specification, standards and codes.

4.0 FABRICATION SEQUENCE

4.1 CALCULATION

Many times at site, custom degree elbows are required apart from regular
45⁰ and 90⁰ elbows. This is achieved by cutting available 45⁰ or 90⁰ elbow.
This requires a circular marking on outer and inner surface of elbow to be
calculated or using approved drawing from customer.

Equation:

1. Calculate arc length of outer surface of elbow

Where:

L1 : Arc length outer surface of elbow 90⁰

L3 : Arc length outer surface of elbow X⁰

X⁰ : elbow degree needed

2. Calculate arc length of inner surface of elbow

Where:

L2 : Arc length inner surface of elbow 90⁰

L4 : Arc length inner surface of elbow X⁰

X⁰ : elbow degree needed

4.2. CREATE A NEW FIXTURE FOR ELBOW TRIMMING

This fabrication is intended to keep the elbow in the center position during trimming.

4.3. MARKING

After Pipe Engineer has calculated the cutting plan, Pipe Fitter can use the
calculation tabel as a guideline for cutting the elbow.

Before Pipe Fitter execute the cutting elbow, marking shall be done on elbow
surface as a cutting guide line.

Steps for Marking:

1. Ensure that Engineer has calculate trimming elbow to anydegree elbow

2. Use elbow 45⁰ for cutting elbow degree below 45⁰ and use elbow 90⁰ for
elbow degree above 45⁰.

3. Use document / calculation tabel from Engineer to guideline the marking

4. Determine the center of elbow

5. Create cutting mark along the surface (outer/inner) elbow that to be cut
as per calculation tabel with measurement device and marker.

6. Start marking from center of elbow to the right and the left.

4.4. CUTTING

Cutting elbow from 45⁰ or 90⁰ to anydegree need, use manual cutting with
bandsaw machine.

Steps for Cutting:

1. . Ensure the marking line is accordance with calculation tabel

2. Use a Fixtures that has been fabricated to ensure the elbow doesn’t
change position

3. Cut the marking line with bandsaw machine.

All edges shall be accurately maintained as per design requirement with a

smooth even surface with all slag removed.

Beveling will be performed with a beveling machine or grinder. Separate

machine will be used for carbon steel and SS.

Stainless steel elbow shall be beveled by a grinding or beveling/ machine only.

Separate machine will be used for carbon steel and stainless steel.

4.5. RE- ROUNDING

If there is a dent in the pipe diameter due to cutting using a bendsaw, re-
rounding will be carried out.

Steps for Re-Rounding :

1. Make an internal rounding contact shaft that’s a little taper, then we put it
into the inside end of the pipe.

2. Hit it with middle size hammer.

3. strike the alignment shaft tool to force the pipe round again.

4.6. CLEANING

This cleaning is done so that the elbows that have been trimmed are not
easily exposed to corrosion before packaging.

Steps for Cleaning :

1. Sand the pipe surface using flap wheel and fine sandpaper until the surface
is clean.

2. Beveling the cut end of the pipe using a hand grinding machine.

3. sand the end of the pipe that has been cut so that it is not sharp.

4.7. PACKING

Packaging is done by wrapping all pipe surfaces with booble wrap and then
put into wooden boxes.
