Second Term English exam

PART ONE: READING (15pts)
A) Comprehension and Interpretation: (8pts)
Read the passage carefully then do the activities.

People at different nations first began to do business with one another because some countries were
able to produce certain goods which other countries could not produce. Differences in soil and climate limit
the cultivation of certain crops to particular regions. For geological reasons also, some minerals are found
only in a few regions. These regional and physical differences gave a basis for international commerce after
satisfactory means of transporting goods had been developed. Because of big losses in transit, articles that
were first exported were very expensive; only the rich had enough money to buy them.
As means of transport got better and transit risks diminished, international commerce gradually
increased. The greatest expansion took place when countries found it advantageous to specialize in the
production of only a few goods. Examples of specialization are Indian cotton, Japanese electronic
equipment, Saudi Arabian oil, etc… Such countries produce more of those few goods and therefore sell
them more cheaply than other countries.
