DRESSING FOR
A CHRISTIAN
LADY
John 14:23
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and
my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with
him.
From the above scriptures we understand that the body is God’s temple, and as
such should be dressed according to His standards.
Some might say but we have the freedom to dress the way we like, true but be
mindful lest somehow our liberty become a stumbling block to our brothers or
sisters.
1 Corinthians 8:9
But beware that lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to
those who are weak.
Genesis 3:21
“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and
clothed them.”
After the fall of man, God took away the fig leaves that Adam and Eve made for
themselves and replaced it with coat of skin. If God wanted them to be naked, He
wouldn’t have made dresses for them.
Esther is a typical example of a lady who also dressed for beauty and dignity. She
understood the purpose of her dressing as a Queen; she did not reduce her virtue
to that of a mere concubine at the Shusan Palace. She refused the clothing of a
harlot and felt so secure in her gracious apparel.
Brethren, adapt the current fashion to your kingdom taste and not vice versa.
3. Identity
Your dressing is the label that draws a conclusion about your person, identity
crisis (inferiority complex) can make people settle for less in their dressing.
Esther knew who she was in destiny and she didn’t feel inferior, remember that
your real identity is in Christ. Your dressing should not contradict your faith, but
rather align your dressing to suit your faith.
A Christian lady as a Christ like lady should be dressed “decently” and the word
decency is defined as being sufficiently dressed, fully dressed. It also means to
be modest.
The female preacher can be preaching on being Christ like but her dressing is
preaching a different sermon to the congregation, because her dressing is
definitely not Christ like.
Remember we’re walking epistles. People SEE our message before they listen to
our message. Whether we like it or yes, we make a statement with our dressing.
When you enter a place, people around even without talking to you would already
have a perception about you, based on your dressing.
You might come off as decent, extravagant, modest, worldly, neat, responsible,
smart, classy etc.
So I ask - what statement is your dressing making?
Moving on, I’ll randomly list the things I’ve learnt from my spiritual father on
dressing and the ones I received in the course of preparing this teaching.
I’ll be very direct, so we won’t miss the point.
2. Your dressing should reflect God. It should reflect His glory and beauty
Your dressing shouldn’t be aimed at accentuating your sexual parts.
3. Check your motive; what is your reason for wearing that dress, or skirt or
shirt.
Is it to impress, is it because it brings out all the curves and shape?
6. We don’t dress to impress the society rather we dress to inspire the society.
8. If you want to wear a dress or you wore it already, and then a question
rises up inside you;
”is this decent enough, should I be wearing this” or you even ask your friend “is
this dress decent enough”
It means something inside you is not at peace with the dressing and you shouldn’t
wear it.
There are days the Holy Spirit tells me to change what I’m wearing. There are
days I change because of a wrong motive. He’s there to correct and teach us. But
are you ready to listen?
When your Spiritual father, your sister, brother or friend corrects your dressing,
how do you take it? Do you fight them and remain in error?
There are other things that make up our dressing. Things like makeup, poise,
hairdo etc. I’m not against makeup, but too much of it is bad. If it is wild then it
is not Christ like. And if God has told you personally not to use makeup, if that
is your consecration, then makeup shouldn’t be part of your dressing.
POISE
How do you carry yourself? How do you sit down?
As ladies, we should keep our legs closed and not sit carelessly with legs wide
open like a man.
Sit responsibly and respectably. Sit carefully and consciously. Hide what needs
to be hidden
HAIRDO
There are hairdos that are wild and I believe Christian ladies shouldn’t make such
hairstyles. In looking beautiful, we shouldn’t forget what we profess;
GODLINESS
1 Timothy 2:9-10
“likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with
modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,
but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”
There should be a difference between your dressing and the people of the world.
We shouldn’t conform to the standards of the world when it comes to dressing,
we should set the standards. We lead we don’t follow. We shouldn’t copy the
world, rather the world should copy us
And God is counting on us to do so! Please let’s dress to depict who we are. We
are royalty- Princesses of the King of kings. Our dressing should depict majesty
and the message we preach.
I’ll end with this:
Colossians 3:12
"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience."
Fill your heart, mind and spirit with Godly things and let your clothes reflect the
beauty and light within you!
May we not just be hearers but doers of the Word in Jesus’ Name.
The Lord will help us in Jesus name.
God bless us all
