GODLY

DRESSING FOR
A CHRISTIAN
LADY

…TRANSCRIPT OF A 2019 WORDFEST TEACHING ON

LIVING STONES BY SIS. FAVOUR OZO
It’s such a great honor and privilege to be sharing with us tonight. I want to
specially thank my spiritual Father, Rev. Temilolu Aliu, for this wonderful
privilege and platform and for all his teachings. Thank you so much Sir.

Tonight I’ll be sharing with us on the topic GODLY DRESSING FOR A

CHRISTIAN LADY.

I will start with two important points -

 The body is God’s temple, it is His dwelling place.

1 Corinthians 3:16
Do you know that you are God’s temple and God’s spirit dwells in you?

John 14:23
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and
my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with
him.

From the above scriptures we understand that the body is God’s temple, and as
such should be dressed according to His standards.

 Do not lead your brother to sin with your dressing.

Mark 9:42
But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be
better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown
into the sea

Some might say but we have the freedom to dress the way we like, true but be
mindful lest somehow our liberty become a stumbling block to our brothers or
sisters.
1 Corinthians 8:9
But beware that lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to
those who are weak.

The oxford dictionary defines dressing as putting on clothes. Emphasis on

putting on.

Now let’s discuss THE PURPOSE OF DRESSING IN THE BIBLE

Abuse is inevitable if the purpose of dressing is not discovered. God’s purposes
for dressing since Adam’s fall are as follows;

1. To cover our nakedness

Genesis 3:7
“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked;
and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”

Genesis 3:21
“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and
clothed them.”

After the fall of man, God took away the fig leaves that Adam and Eve made for
themselves and replaced it with coat of skin. If God wanted them to be naked, He
wouldn’t have made dresses for them.

Nakedness came as a result of disobedience to God’s instruction; this caused utter

separation from God. Don’t let your dressing separate you from God.

2. For beauty and dignity

God commanded that a priestly garment should be made for Aaron and his sons
for glory and beauty.

1 Peter 2:9 says,

“You are the chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own
special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of
darkness into His marvellous light”.

Esther is a typical example of a lady who also dressed for beauty and dignity. She
understood the purpose of her dressing as a Queen; she did not reduce her virtue
to that of a mere concubine at the Shusan Palace. She refused the clothing of a
harlot and felt so secure in her gracious apparel.

Brethren, adapt the current fashion to your kingdom taste and not vice versa.

3. Identity
Your dressing is the label that draws a conclusion about your person, identity
crisis (inferiority complex) can make people settle for less in their dressing.
Esther knew who she was in destiny and she didn’t feel inferior, remember that
your real identity is in Christ. Your dressing should not contradict your faith, but
rather align your dressing to suit your faith.

A Christian lady as a Christ like lady should be dressed “decently” and the word
decency is defined as being sufficiently dressed, fully dressed. It also means to
be modest.

COMMON CARELESSNESS AMONGST LADIES

1. The cloth is long and very free; but transparent.

Some ladies ignorantly wear so called long clothes that are revealing. Pay
attention to obscene dressing and make full length lining and the appropriate
colour ready before wearing.

2. The cloth got torn (when I was climbing a bike.)

The cloth got torn and since that day you have not mended it. Ladies should
cultivate the habit of wearing under garment and camisole in case of such
emergencies. Also, always carry in your bags needles and thread.

3. I have grown fatter

Don’t manage a cloth that is no longer your size; believe God for a new one.

4. Pseudo-holiness and mediocrity.

The level of your holiness can not be measured by the wretchedness of your faded
blouses, colour riot and oversized clothes.
Stop misrepresenting saints, saints are good looking people.
If you don’t know how to dress, learn from your God-given role model.

5. It is still early in the morning or it is already late in the night.

Dress ready, you may be called upon anytime.

6. Who is looking at me?

Some ladies feel no one is looking at them, and so end up dressing anyhow.
People are looking at you or following your example.
7. I live in girl’s hostel
Some girls deliberately dress scantily like a common girl even in the hostel.
Don’t adopt that style.

8. I feel so different and archaic.

Never feel bad because you are well dressed, covering your body is not strange
so don’t be intimidated.

Let’s see some EXAMPLES OF INDECENT DRESSING

1. Dresses with missing front buttons.
2. Sleeveless, backless, tubelike dresses.
3. Transparent dresses without the appropriate underwear.
4. Tight-fitted dresses that display your curves, pant lines and bra strap.
5. Dresses that exposes your cleavage and sacred parts.
6. Tiny skirts that exposes your upper legs above the knees at the back and in
front.

Dressing inappropriately has its consequences---

 Disrespect, Disfavour from the people of your destiny.
 It attracts sons of belial (useless men)
 Exposes you to sexual abuse such as rape, Loss of opportunity, Eternal
separation, and lots more.

HOW THEN SHOULD A CHRISTIAN LADY DRESS?

• Dress modestly.
Cover your body adequately- your shoulders, upper arm, arm pit down to the
breast line, your cloth should cover your cleavage and navel. Cover what the tailor
exposed with your full length under garment.
-Avoid tight fitted clothes, but wear your size, not over-sized clothes.
-Dress for beauty and honour.

• Dress in a way that reveals God to the world.

Your dressing is like a message that you send to people or someone, (whatever
the case may be) way before you speak to them. Imagine a female preacher,
mount the pulpit to preach, wearing something that is revealing, before she even
says a word, her dressing has sent a message already.
What message does your dressing pass across to people?
What “Gospel” is your dressing preaching?
Is it different from the message you preach with your mouth or is it consistent
with it?

The female preacher can be preaching on being Christ like but her dressing is
preaching a different sermon to the congregation, because her dressing is
definitely not Christ like.

Remember we’re walking epistles. People SEE our message before they listen to
our message. Whether we like it or yes, we make a statement with our dressing.
When you enter a place, people around even without talking to you would already
have a perception about you, based on your dressing.

You might come off as decent, extravagant, modest, worldly, neat, responsible,
smart, classy etc.
So I ask - what statement is your dressing making?

Moving on, I’ll randomly list the things I’ve learnt from my spiritual father on
dressing and the ones I received in the course of preparing this teaching.
I’ll be very direct, so we won’t miss the point.

1. Dress to honour God

In choosing what to wear, this should be our number one focus.
Dress smartly, neatly, beautifully but most importantly dress decently. Seek to
please God, and honor Him in your dressing, not men.

2. Your dressing should reflect God. It should reflect His glory and beauty
Your dressing shouldn’t be aimed at accentuating your sexual parts.

3. Check your motive; what is your reason for wearing that dress, or skirt or
shirt.
Is it to impress, is it because it brings out all the curves and shape?

4. Everything that needs to be covered should be covered.

Make sure they are not in any way showing. There’s a reason it’s called “Private
part”, don’t make it public.
The inner wears shouldn’t be showing in anyway too. It is called Inner wear.
Too much skin is a no no!

5. Avoid wearing something that you have to keep adjusting.

E.g. a shirt that you have to keep adjusting the button cos it’s too tight, you’ll just
keep directing people’s eyes there and might end up leading someone to sin.

6. We don’t dress to impress the society rather we dress to inspire the society.

7. Don’t see your dressing as a burden, be happy dressing decently.

Don’t be the kind of lady that looks at the indecent dressing of the world and wish
you could dress that way too.

8. If you want to wear a dress or you wore it already, and then a question
rises up inside you;
”is this decent enough, should I be wearing this” or you even ask your friend “is
this dress decent enough”

It means something inside you is not at peace with the dressing and you shouldn’t
wear it.

9. Submit your dressing to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is our guide in everything, if we are not sure of anything at all
He’s the best person to go to. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct you, obey His
leading.

There are days the Holy Spirit tells me to change what I’m wearing. There are
days I change because of a wrong motive. He’s there to correct and teach us. But
are you ready to listen?

When your Spiritual father, your sister, brother or friend corrects your dressing,
how do you take it? Do you fight them and remain in error?

There are other things that make up our dressing. Things like makeup, poise,
hairdo etc. I’m not against makeup, but too much of it is bad. If it is wild then it
is not Christ like. And if God has told you personally not to use makeup, if that
is your consecration, then makeup shouldn’t be part of your dressing.
POISE
How do you carry yourself? How do you sit down?

As ladies, we should keep our legs closed and not sit carelessly with legs wide
open like a man.

Sit responsibly and respectably. Sit carefully and consciously. Hide what needs
to be hidden

HAIRDO
There are hairdos that are wild and I believe Christian ladies shouldn’t make such
hairstyles. In looking beautiful, we shouldn’t forget what we profess;
GODLINESS

If you’re with me say My Dressing my Profession

1 Timothy 2:9-10
“likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with
modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,
but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”

There should be a difference between your dressing and the people of the world.
We shouldn’t conform to the standards of the world when it comes to dressing,
we should set the standards. We lead we don’t follow. We shouldn’t copy the
world, rather the world should copy us

It’s up to us Christian ladies to uphold the standard of God as regards dressing.

We have to take over and be pace setters in that regard. Enough of Christian ladies
copying worldly dressing and bringing it into the church. The world doesn’t know
better, we know better ladies. We set the standard.

Say with me We set the standard

And God is counting on us to do so! Please let’s dress to depict who we are. We
are royalty- Princesses of the King of kings. Our dressing should depict majesty
and the message we preach.
I’ll end with this:
Colossians 3:12
"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience."

Fill your heart, mind and spirit with Godly things and let your clothes reflect the
beauty and light within you!

May we not just be hearers but doers of the Word in Jesus’ Name.
The Lord will help us in Jesus name.
God bless us all
