Question 1 (10 points)

Block 1 of mass m = 6 kg rides on top of block 2 of mass M = 12 kg. A person attaches a string to the bottom
block and pulls the system horizontally across a surface as shown in Figure 1.1. Friction between the two
blocks keeps the block 1 from slipping off. Given the ground surface is frictionless, the static friction
coefficient between two blocks is 0.2, and the kinetic friction coefficient between two blocks is 0.1.

Figure 1.1

a) Find the maximum force can be exerted by the string on block 2 without causing block 1 to slip. (5 points)
b) If the force exerted by the string on block 2 is now equal to two times the value of maximum force found
in question a, and there is one more external force F of magnitude 2 N which is acting on block 1 as shown
in Figure 1.2. Find the acceleration of block 2. (5 points)

Question 2 (8 points)

An aircraft lands on the runway at a speed of 90 m/s and maintain the constant speed for 3 seconds before
applying the brakes. After that, the aircraft decelerates at the constant rate of 4 m/s2 before coming to full stop.

Figure 2.

a) What is the total displacement of the aircraft between touchdown on the runway and coming to rest? (4
points)
b) If 3 seconds after landing (touchdown) the pilot recognises an emergency situation that he speeds up the
aircraft to take off again. The aircraft positions on the runway recorded from landing (touchdown) is
presented in the table below as:

Time
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
(s)
Position
0 90 180 270 400 560 800 1200 1700
(m)

Plot the graph representing the position over time. Then, find the instantaneous velocity of the aircraft at 6
second and the average velocity of the aircraft duration 8 seconds since landing. (4 points)

Problem 3 (9 points)

A jet plane travelling horizontally at 100 m/s drops a rocket at a height of 1500 m above the ground as shown
in Figure 3. The rocket immediately fires its engines, accelerating at 20 m/s2 in the x direction while falling
under the influence of gravity in the y direction. Neglect any other forces acting on the rocket.

Figure 3.

a) Find the rocket velocity when the rocket has fallen 500 m. (5 points)
b) When the rocket has just fallen 500 m as in question 3a, its engines are immediately turned off. Find the
velocity of the rocket just before it hits the ground. (4 points)

Problem 4 (8 points)

A boat in Figure 4 is heading due North as it crosses a wide river with the velocity of 15 km/h relative to the
water. The river has a uniform velocity of 6 km/h due east.

Figure 4.

a) Determine the boat’s velocity with respect to an observer standing on the riverbank. (4 points)
b) If an observer on the riverbank is now running toward the North direction with the velocity of 15 km/h.
Find the observer’s velocity with respect to the boat. (4 points)
