HOW TO

DESIGN ESP
PUMP
Using
ESP DESIGN TOOL
1. GATHER WELLBORE, RESERVOIR, AND FLUID PROPERTIES DATA

Gather well trajectory, wellbore schematic, and completion guide.

1. GATHER WELLBORE, RESERVOIR, AND FLUID PROPERTIES DATA

Gather production and fluid properties. Don’t forget to ask the target rate.
1. GATHER WELLBORE, RESERVOIR, AND FLUID PROPERTIES DATA

Consult IPR and PI to

Production Engineer

Well History

Pump History
Evaluate the target
rate to AOFP and
expected PBHP

Review well production history and pump history to gain information about well problem and evaluate the IPR.
2. CALCULATE GAS VOLUME FACTOR

Check the gas

volume factor and
compare it to pump
capability of handling
gas

Gas separator

Gas handler stage

Calculate gas volume factor and Turpin value to determine utilization of gas separator and/or gas handler.
3. SELECT COMPATIBLE PUMP STAGE

Evaluate the total

dynamic head, check
WHP and tubing size
if TDH looks Consider the number
unreasonable. of stage, the higher
the number the
longer the pump.

Check the ROR and

consider the changes Power requirement
of operating affect electrical
condition. ROR of equipment on the
pump must mitigate surface
all operating
condition rate

Calculate downhole rate based on desired surface rate, then calculate total dynamic head required to satisfied desired operating
condition. Select pump stage based on downhole rate and expected problem. Calculate required amount of pump stage and calculate the
power consumption.
4. SELECT COMPATIBLE PROTECTOR CONFIGURATION

Applicability

Manufacturer

Choose protector configuration based on wellbore properties, fluid properties, and pump operating condition. Select protector series
based on used pump series.
5. SELECT COMPATIBLE MOTOR

Do not design motor

load too low or too
high.

Motor type

Choose motor based on ESP required HP at extreme condition and at 80% motor load, select the highest. Calculate the operating motor
speed and electrical current.
6. ITERATE THE PUMP OPERATING CONDITION

Consider to select
another number of
stages if changes in
WHP and VSD
frequency cannot
satisfy target rate

Change the well head

pressure, VSD
frequency to satisfy
target rate.

Iterate all calculation to get more precise operating condition. Total dynamic head and pump head are calculated for a range of rate, then
the intersection considered as the operating condition. This method has the same concept with Nodal Analysis, you can also do Nodal
Analysis instead. Evaluate calculated rate and changes operating parameter if the calculated rate has not satisfied the target rate.
7. EVALUATE PUMP INTEGRITY AND MOTOR COOLING

Compare the
operating wellhead
pressure, it must not
higher that WHP at
burst pressure limit
of the pump head.

Evaluate the fluid

velocity at motor
annular.

Calculate shut-in pressure, the pressure in pump head when flow rate is zero. Evaluate the well head pressure if shut-in pressure
overcome the burst pressure limit. Also calculate the fluid velocity on the annular, it must be greater than 1 ft/s based on the rule of
thumb.
8. EVALUATE ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES

Operating ampere is multiplied by 1.15 to simulating worst condition of well fluid, then compared to ampacity of the cable. Calculate the
voltage drop, it must be less than 60 V/1000ft by the rule of thumb. Then calculate the required power in the surface.
