Jose Rizal is a national hero of the Philippines, renowned for his contributions to the Filipino struggle

for independence from Spanish colonial rule. He was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna,
Philippines, and died by execution on December 30, 1896, in Manila, Philippines, at the age of 35.

Rizal was a multifaceted individual who excelled in various fields. He was a writer, poet,
ophthalmologist, and revolutionary thinker. His literary works, particularly his novels "Noli Me
Tangere" (Touch Me Not) and "El Filibusterismo" (The Reign of Greed), played a crucial role in
inspiring Filipinos to fight against Spanish oppression. These novels exposed the abuses of Spanish
friars and colonial authorities, sparking nationalistic sentiments among Filipinos.

Apart from his literary contributions, Rizal was also involved in various reformist and revolutionary
movements aimed at attaining Filipino independence. His ideas and actions inspired many Filipinos
to strive for freedom from Spanish colonial rule.

Rizal's martyrdom at the hands of the Spanish authorities further fueled the flames of the Philippine
Revolution, ultimately leading to the declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.
Today, Jose Rizal is revered as a symbol of Filipino nationalism, intellect, and bravery, with
monuments, parks, and institutions dedicated to preserving his memory and legacy across the
Philippines.
