The United Nations' four primary function issues are:

Military issues: The United Nations works to keep conflicts at bay and promote peace. This includes
dispatching peacekeeping missions to conflict zones, disarming and demobilizing ex-combatants, and
assisting countries in establishing long-term peace.

Economic issues: The UN promotes economic development and poverty reduction. This involves
lending money to underdeveloped countries, assisting with microcredit initiatives, and promoting
commerce and investment.

Concerns about the environment: The United Nations works to protect the environment and battle
climate change. This involves creating international environmental treaties, assisting countries with
environmental difficulties, and raising awareness about the necessity of environmental conservation.

Human rights protection: The United Nations aims to preserve and promote human rights. This
involves monitoring human rights violations, giving humanitarian aid to those in need, and
encouraging universal access to education and health care.

These four function concerns are inextricably linked. Economic development, for example, can aid in
the reduction of poverty and conflict; environmental protection can aid in the improvement of
human health and well-being; and human protection can aid in the creation of a more stable and
peaceful world.

The UN also has a number of other responsibilities, such as promoting international law, providing
humanitarian aid, and coordinating disaster relief. However, the four function concerns mentioned
above are the most basic to the UN's mandate.

The following are some concrete examples of UN activities in each of these areas:

Military issues: The United Nations now operates 12 peacekeeping missions around the world. These
missions aid in conflict prevention, civilian protection, and peacebuilding.

Economic issues: Through its numerous institutions and programs, such as the World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund, the UN provides financial aid to underdeveloped countries. Through
the World commerce Organization (WTO), the UN also encourages commerce and investment.

Environmental issues: The United Nations has taken the lead in creating international environmental
treaties such as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The UN also offers countries with technical
support to solve environmental issues such as water pollution and deforestation.

Human rights protection: The UN Human Rights Council and the Office of the High Commissioner for
Human Rights monitor human rights violations. The United Nations also provides humanitarian aid to
persons in need through its different organizations, including the World Food Programme and the
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
