A SPEECH
is a formal talk that a person delivers to an audience.

Speech means what the speaker says in front of the audience. It is fully
audience-oriented system. Generally the political leaders, the managers, the
business man or the workers’ leaders use this system sometimes. It can build
tension or it can relax tension. This system is practiced in public gathering, at
company meetings, inauguration and seminars etc. It needs to considerable
skills otherwise it is not effective.
Vital Things about Speech
* A speech begins with a formal address to the chief guest, fellow speakers and Audience
* More conversational in tone. Pause questions, use interactive expressions like I think you
will agree with me, Don’t you think that , I am sure that you will have the same notion .
Does any one has the opinion that etc.
* Begins with brief, catchy introduction- supported by an anecdote, quotation, striking
statistical data or a thought provoking question. It decides the fate of the speech.
* Introduce your topic to the audience clearly.
* Include adequate supporting data to make it credible and interesting
* Have clear idea about the purpose of the speech and the target audience.
* Originality of ideas powerful language, humour and repetitions are allowed, only to
emphasize or focus the listener’s attention.
Vital Things about Speech
* Similar to introduction, conclusion should be brief , catchy and striking
* the written speech should consist of short sentences having not more than 10 to 12 words in
a sentence.

* No title to be given for the speech.

*Avoid abstract phrases. Use simple and familiar language.

The effects, such as raising one’s voice, giving stress to certain words, pausing for a short
time etc. can be represented in a written speech by using such techniques as increasing the
size of the letters of the sentence to be stressed, or using all capitals for a particular word to be
emphasized, leaving a few dots (….) after a question to indicate a pause.

* Say/Write ‘Thank you’ at the end of your speech.

Format of a speech
In order to write a perfect speech, we must be well acquainted with the topic and must possess
a wide range of vocabulary, a thorough knowledge of the subject, some research and excellent
organisational skills. Here is the ideal format and tips to help you write your perfect speech.
A perfect speech must consist of :-
 HEADING- The heading should be catchy and in not more than 5-6 words. You can go as
creative as you want with this one just make sure you do not devote too much time on it in
the exam.
 OPENING LINE- This includes salutations, introduction and the topic. Make sure you do
not mention your personal details (name, school name, etc.).
Example- Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends! Today, I (name given in the
question) stand before you all to speak on the topic “(given in the question)”.
OR you could start with a quote related to the topic and then go with the salutations and
introduction.
 Format of a speech ( Continued…)
 BODY- It is the main part of your writing piece. Put in for paragraphs.
 It is always prescribed that you begin with a short introduction on the topic, it’s meant to
be precise.
 Then you need to explain the current situation, the problems (if any) and whether after any
corrective actions, betterment in the situation has been observed or not.
 It may include advantages/ disadvantages depending upon the topic in question.
 Now here, it is important you follow a sequence. It is possible that you have too many
points or very few points. When you have a lot of varied points, it is better you choose a
few best ones and write a line on each. In case you have very few already, explain them in
at least two lines each.
 You have to strictly follow the prescribed word limit in a limited time frame so just do not
go on writing and writing.
 Format of a speech ( Continued…)

 MOST IMPORTANT- Always begin with your strongest point. You can accommodate
the weaker ones in between and end with another strong point.
 Feel free to give your personal opinion in one or two lines.
 It is very important that you do not deviate from the topic. There are chances you may
get ideas linking from one to another that may deviate you from the main point. You have
to refrain from doing so.

 SOLUTION/CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH- Now, it is to be remembered that

wherever you elaborate a problem, you always have to mention the steps being taken to
improvise the situation and suggest a few solutions as well.

Sample Speech 2. You are Ankit/Ankita. You have to deliver a speech on the topic “Education Gives One Power”.
EDUCATION GIVES POWER
Respected Principal, teachers and dear friends. I am Ankita and I will be speaking on the topic,”Education gives one Power”
Education provides us knowledge. It trains our mind and sharpens our skills and abilities. Education refines our tastes and temperaments
and builds our thought process. Vocational courses help young boys to earn and learn together. They provide means of earning
livelihood and open the route to employment.

Professional courses, as is evident from the name itself, equip us for adopting various professions. Some of these highly skilled
professionals seek placements or jobs in esteemed companies and business concerns. Thus education is important for our survival.
Decent living is impossible
without good income or high salary.

Education improves the quality of our life and frees us of superstition, foolish, meaningless mind-blocks and rituals. If women are
educated the whole family benefits as the food is hygienically prepared, children are healthy, well-mannered and disciplined.

Education gives us power over our environment. We can control the situation and shape our destiny. Education spreads awareness
among people and gives them freedom from social ills. It makes people independent by providing them means to learn their living. They
become responsible citizens and realise their rights and duties. In short, education gives one power.

Thank you for being so patient and sparing your precious time.
THANK YOU
