● Other Names of Independence Palace (LÀM WORD)


- In 1871, the Palace was named Norodom Palace
- From 1871 to 1887, the palace was known as the Governor's Palace of Cochinchina,
reflecting its role as the headquarters of the governor governing Cochinchina.
- From 1887 to 1945, it was called the Governor General's Palace, representing
comprehensive power during the colonial period.
- Around 1955, President Ngo Dinh Diem changed the name of the Governor General's
Palace to Independence Palace and it is used to this day.

=> THUYẾT TRÌNH GTHIEU SƠ VỀ DINH: Independence Palace is also known by many
different names, such as Norodom Palace, Governor’s Palace, or Reunification Palace. This
place was once the residence and working place of the President of the Republic of Vietnam. It
is also witnessed many historical events in Saigon.

● Recognition: The Independence Palace was recognized as a National Cultural and


Historical Relic in 1976 . By 2009, it was ranked as one of the first ten Special National
Monuments of Vietnam.
● The surrounding landscape (LÀM WORD)

The Palace’s front lawn is oval-shaped with a diameter of 102m. The grassy lawn
produces calm feelings for guests when they walk through the gate.

Running along the length of the lobby is a half-moon shaped pool filled with lotus and lily
pads.
Besides, at the left corner of the Palace grounds (on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street side),
there is an octagonal pavilion 4m in diameter. Built atop an earthen mound, the
pavilion, with traditional style arched roof and no walls, provides an ideal place for fresh
air and relaxation.

Although the Independence Palace gate was knocked down by a tank, it has been
repaired and is currently the main gate into the tourist area. To visit, we need to go
through the grounds along with the fountain to enter the inner area.

1. Overall outside

Architect Ngo Viet Thu designed the building on an area of 4,500 m², usable area of
20,000 m², including 3 floors, 2 mezzanines, 1 terrace, 1 ground floor, and 2 basement.

He designed the palace to convey the key principles of Eastern philosophy as well as the
integration of modern and traditional styles. Palace's layout forms the Chinese
character for “fortune”.
”ARCHITECTURAL SYMBOLS”

+ The Palace’center is shaped in the character for “Mouth” (Kou) to promote education
and free speech.
+ The shape of character “Mouth” has a vertical flag post in the middle to form character
“Fidelity” (Zhong) to remind the need for fidelity in democracya
+ The terrace, balcony, and portico to the ante-chamber form the horizontal lines in the
character “Three” (San), in accordance with the democracy concept composed of
“Humanity, Intelligence, Strength.”
+ The three horizontal strokes are connected by a vertical stroke forming the character
“King” (Wang), above which is a flag tower producing the dot in the character “Master”
(Zhu), symbolizing national sovereignty.
+ The balconies of 2nd and 3rd floors combine with the main entrance portico and two
wood covered columns below the portico to create the character “Prosperity” (Xing)
meaning to wish the country eternal prosperity.

2. Architecture inside the Independence Palace

The Independence Palace has different rooms for different purposes.


+ The largest room in the Independence Palace is The State Chamber, located
on the ground floor. You will be impressed by the red color covering the room.
It symbolizes luck and power of the owner.

+ The second floor is the reception home and workplace of the President and Vice
President of the Republic of Vietnam. The Room for Diplomatic Credential

+ While the third floor is designed to entertain, read, or play cards.

+ UH1 helicopter manufactured by Bell (USA), equipped for the US in 1959 and

used at the Vietnam War in 1962, is placed on the roof.


+ Stone flower curtains – Decoration surrounding the floors: The Palace’s
external stone lattice work surrounding its upper 2nd floor gives the impression
of elegant bamboo sections. This is the work of sculptor Nguyen Van The. Not
only does this add to the Palace’s beauty but it also mediates sunlight.

3. Why is the Independence Palace a destination not to be missed on the


journey to explore Saigon?

The Independence Palace is a historic site that preserves the proud landmarks of our
nation in the struggle to protect the country. With that great significance, this place has
always attracted a lot of cube visitors to visit. Tourists come here to visit, take souvenirs
and learn more about the country's majestic history. In terms of spiritual value,
Independence Palace is a place that marks the peaceful moment of the nation and is a
witness of Vietnam War. The palace is considered to be the source of Ho Chi Minh City
with ups and downs in the history of anti-extravagant gait. There are many rare artifacts
of up to a hundred years old, they have witnessed not knowing how many glorious
historical events. But the precious historical artifacts are displayed in the palace as the
helicopter of President Nguyen Van Thieu, Mercedes Benz car from Germany, the
tank, fighter…What makes visitors like best when coming here is a space full of lush
greenery, peaceful gardens, lots of birds, and there's a fountain on the frontal of
Independence Palace that's a popular spot where check prints. Visitors not only visit
the unique architecture of the palace, but also see firsthand the precious images and
historical artifacts. The Independence Palace is more than just a tourist destination of
Saigon, a historic site of the country, but more than this is home to a part of the proud
past of the Vietnamese nation, which brings visitors to relive the old time, know love
and cherish peace and the present life.Visitors can feel all the pride and gratitude for
those who sacrificed their blood.
