‭Research Based Decision Making‬

‭“‬‭Community Organizing Uplifts Immigrant Students‬‭”:‬ ‭Benz (2022) explored March 24,‬
2‭ 024. The participants were a class of predominantly immigrant 3rd graders from the Mott‬
‭Haven neighborhood in New York City. The findings were that through family support and‬
‭community involvement, students have a better chance at knowing how to fight for their‬
‭rights and education. The author suggested that by understanding their own place within a‬
‭community, immigrant students and their families have a better chance at overcoming larger‬
‭hurdles. This literature is related to CSTP 1.2 and 2.1 as it uses knowledge of students’‬
‭backgrounds and current life experiences while showing how a community which cares‬
‭promotes within the students a sense of responsibility and understanding of their value in‬
‭society. As a teacher leader, this article reminds me that I should always promote social‬
‭development through the inclusion of family and community life.‬

‭Progress: Amore, A., Hoeflich, N., & Pennington, K. (2015).‬‭Examined March 30, 2024.‬
‭Data drew from multiple school districts throughout the country, but I focused on the San‬
‭Juan Unified School District in Carmichael, California. The findings were that teachers who‬
‭had more prep time throughout the week and choice of instructional material played a large‬
‭impact on students’ learning. The authors suggested giving teachers the ability and time to‬
‭choose their common core curriculum and allow them time to collaborate and learn their‬
‭curriculum.. This literature is related to CSTP 4.3 in that it works alongside long term‬
‭development of students’ learning by choosing curriculum and supporting materials which‬
‭will best support understanding. As a teacher leader, this paper reminds me that I should‬
‭take the time to further develop my curriculum through supportive materials and deepen my‬
‭understanding of it.‬

‭ hese two articles suggest that through appropriate time, working within the community,‬
T
‭and having a choice in curriculum, all provide support in not only a student’s ability to‬
‭learn, but also the teacher’s understanding of their students. However, whereas Benz‬
‭recommends that having support through one's community allows students and families to‬
‭overcome hurdles,‬ ‭Amore, Hoeflich, and Pennington‬‭recommend that students’ learning is‬
‭supported through the teacher’s ability to choose the correct Common Core curriculum and‬
‭supporting materials while having ample time to prepare lessons. As a teacher leader, these‬
‭articles showed me that I need both in order to best support my coworkers and students as‬
‭one deals with socioeconomic understanding while the other handles bureaucracy. These‬
‭both apply to my ILP as I am using supporting materials to add onto my curriculum for‬
‭students to gain a better understanding of their communities and cultures through the use of‬
‭letters to local organizations.‬
