ROLE OF
LUBRICANTS

3
THE ROLE OF LUBRICANTS

Friction Reduction (Prevent / Minimize Wear)

Providing a film to separate interactive surfaces
Coating the rubbing surfaces with a protective film.

Cleaning
By flushing dirt particles away from lubricated surfaces.

Cooling
By reducing friction and removing excess heat.

Protection (corrosion resistance)

By inhibiting the corrosive processes caused by air and water.

- Better pumpability - Excellent Oxidation resistance
-Extremely low pour point - low volatility (low oil consumption)
- Excellent chemical stability
SYNTHETIC ADVANTAGES

Higher viscosity index; adequate oil film maintained at all temperatures

(longer equipment lifetime)
Exceptional oxidation stability; Higher operating temperatures

Remarkable low temperature fluidity; Better pump-ability (fuel economy)

High chemical and thermal stability; longer operating hours (lower costs)

Excellent levels of detergency and dispersancy; Cleaner equipment

components (longer equipment lifetime)

Lower traction coefficient; lower internal friction (fuel economy)

TBN : Total Base Number

Pour point is the lowest temperature at which the

lubricant can still be poured.

Flash point is the lowest temperature to be reached

for the vapours to spontaneously ignite in the presence
of a flame.

Fire point is the lowest temperature to be reached for

ignition to be followed by combustion of the oil itself (on
average Flash point + 30°C).
HYDRAULIC OIL
HYDRAULIC CIRCUITS

• Purpose of hydraulic circuits :

- Transmit energy from one point to another point with the help of a fluid
- Advantages versus mechanical transmissions :
• More accurate motions,
- Easier to control the speed variation with the oil flow (automatism, regulation …)
- Motions are easily reversible
• Smaller size of the equipment regarding the value of the output,
• Higher flexibility of the installation.

• Examples of application : industry, earth moving equipments…

FUNCTIONS AND PROPERTIES OF HYDRAULIC OIL

• Transmit energy from one point to another point of the circuit :

- Efficiency of the equipment  adapted viscosity (bad choice : cavitations, leakage
…)
- Good shear stability
- Stable compressibility with water or air contamination

• Lubricate mechanical components :

- Reduce friction & wear, avoid seizure : lubricant & anti-wear properties

• Protect materials of the circuit :

- Water or air contamination : anti-corrosion & anti-rust properties
- Fully compatible with seals, metallic components …

Examples of energy sources : Examples of receptors :

•Steam turbines •Industrial fans
•Gas turbines •Mills (paper, sugar, cement …)
•Electric motors •Grinders
•Crusher
FUNCTIONS OF INDUSTRIAL GEAR OILS

• Prevent direct contact between the two moving surfaces:

To maintain a protective oil film.
• Reduce friction between teeth and in bearings in order to increase the transmission
output
• Cooling
• Protect surfaces against rust and corrosion
• Protect surfaces against abrasive pollutants (dust, wear residues…)
• Keep contact surfaces clean (deposits, varnishes, mud …)
• Reduce transmission noise (vibrations …)
• Not aggressive towards seals, plastics, paints …
