CHAPTER 7

This week's theme is living in multicultural worlds. First of all, it is necessary to talk about
the difficulties of adapting to a new culture. Culture is a very broad term, it includes language,
religion, traditions and much more. While conducting studies on culture, each field should be
examined separately and it is necessary to master the characteristics of all of them. The
culture trend graph on page 261 is the most general summary of feelings towards the new
culture. Migrants who pass from a heritage culture to a new culture will first go through a
honeymoon period, then the culture shock and finally the adaptation. Of course, can everyone
reach the final stage or how long or short it will get through this process. These differ from
person to person. People who adapt better will get through this process more easily. There are
some factors that affect adaptation. These are factors such as cultural distance, cultural fit.
Cultural distance refers to the differences between the heritage culture and the new culture,
while cultural fit means that the wolves are more alike. As a result of psychological research,
it has been observed that there are some cultural strategies. Integration, marginalization,
assimilation, separation. The aim in integration includes attempts to adapt to the host culture
while trying to maintain the traditions of heritage culture. The opposite happens in
marginalization culture. there is less effort to participate in and be influenced by the new
culture. The assimilation strategy is less of an effort to maintain the traditions of the heritage
culture to adapt to the new culture. Separation strategy involves making less effort to join the
new culture and striving to maintain the heritage culture. Blending is a term for bicultural
people with a psychological bias towards both cultures. Frame switching, on the other hand, is
a tendency for bicultural people to change between different cultural selves. Research has
been done and evidence has been presented for these trends. Multicultural people can be more
creative. Because these people tend to master the two cultures and many of their
characteristics. This encourages them to be more open-minded and creative.
