OLD ENGLISH
AD 500 - 1066 AD

The proto-English spoken by the Angles and Saxons morphed over time into
Old English.
Old English gradually supplanted the old Latin and Celtic influences in England.
The Old English “Fæder ure şu şe eart on heofonum, si şin nama gehalgod”
translates to the Modern English “Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be
thy name”
Despite the seemingly alien nature of Old English, it does have some similarities of
structure and syntax to the language we speak and write today.
MIDDLE ENGLISH
1066 AD - 1485 AD

After the Norman Conquest, the English language was slowly

replaced by the Anglo-Norman dialect (a dialect of Old Norman
French), this eventually evolved into what is known as Middle
English. It was heavily influenced by Anglo-Norman French
Middle English was spoken and written from the mid-1100s until
the mid-1400s.
EARLY MODERN ENGLISH
1485 AD - 1800 AD

The shift from Middle English to Early Modern English happened due
to numerous cultural, political, and economic factors. One of them was
the invention of the printing press.
This was significant because people started using a common language in
print. As a result, English grammar and spelling became more
standardize
SHAKESPEARE’S
INFLUENCE

The writings of Shakespeare actually influenced the English language,

as his works contributed to standardize English language rules and
grammar in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Before him, the rules of English were not very specific. Through his
works, guidelines for grammar, spelling and vocabulary were gradually
established and became common
LATE MODERN ENGLISH
1800 AD - PRESENT

The Industrial Revolution was a period of major mechanization

and innovation that began in Great Britain during the mid-18th
century and early 19th century.
The advances and discoveries in science and technology during
the Industrial Revolution saw a need for new words, phrases, and
concepts to describe these ideas and inventions. Due to the nature
of these works, scientists and scholars created words using Greek
and Latin roots e.g. bacteria, histology, nuclear, biology.
