IMPORTANT LANDMARKS IN INDIAN TELIVISION HISTORY

1. On July 7 1978, the first Indian soap opera, Hum Log, aired on Doordarshan, the only television
channel at that time.
2. With 78 episodes, Ramayan, which aired from 1987 to 1988, became the most watched television
series in the world during that time.
3. In November 1982, the government imported 50,000 colored television sets for the Asian Games
being hosted in India.
4. The Supreme Court ruling of 1995 which states that airwaves are not owned by Indian
Government led to the growth of private channels in India.
5. Indian television took on a new age with the advent of OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime
etc.
