Munāzara: Why Recover the Forgotten Islamic Discipline of Debate?

Abstract: Debate is an indispensable part of our lives, from personal to international


relations, but how to debate, and what is the goal of debate? Different cultures
developed different models and rules of debate based on their worldviews and values.
Currently, we rely on the Western Anglo-Saxon debate models from the UK and the US.
Yet as Muslims, we had a long tradition of debate called Adāb al-Bahth wa al-Munāzara,
rooted in Islamic worldview and values. It is shortly called Ādāb. This more than a one-
thousand years long tradition has been abandoned and forgotten during the
Westernization of education, even though it was a requirement in the Islamic education
system for centuries. Today it is high time for us to recover and revive this discipline to
‫ رﺟﺐ ﺷﻨﺘﻮرك‬.‫ د‬.‫أ‬ offer an alternative to the Western debate model. Munāzara is preferable to the Western
Prof. Recep Şentürk debate models because it follows ethical rules and aims to discover the truth rather than
overcome the other side for a hedonistic sense of victory. This requires spiritual

‫ﻗ ﻄﺮ‬ Shortly put, debaters at the level of al-nafs al-ammāra run after victory to demonstrate

‫اﻟﻨﻘﺎش ﰲ اﳊﻴﺎة اﻟﻴﻮﻣﻴﺔ – ﻛﺎن اﻟﻔﻌﻞ اﻟﺘﻮاﺻﲇ ﰲ ﺗﺼﻮره ﻟﻔﻈﻴﺎ‪ ،‬وﻫﻮ ﻣﺎ ﺳﺎر ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻧﻬﺞ ﺗﺤﻠﻴﻞ وﻓﻬﻢ اﳋﻄﺎﺑﺔ واﳉﺪل واﻤﻟﻨﺎﻇﺮة ﻋﲆ ﻣﺪار‬
‫ﺗﺎر ﻳﺦ اﻟﺘﻔﻠﺴﻒ واﻟﺘﻨﻈﲑ‪ ،‬ﺣﱴ ﰲ اﳊﺪﻳﺚ ﻋﻦ ﻓﻠﺴﻔﺔ اﻟﺼﻤﺖ ودوره ﰲ ﻋﻤﻠﻴﺔ اﳉﺪل ﻛﻌﻤﻠﻴﺔ ﻣﺮﻛﺒﺔ ﺗﺘﻀﻤﻦ اﳊﺠﺎج واﻷﺳﻠﻮب وﻟﻐﺔ‬
‫اﳉﺴﺪ أﻳﻀﺎ‪.‬‬
‫وﻗﺪ ﺷﻬﺪت اﻟﻌﻘﻮد اﻤﻟﺎﺿﻴﺔ ﻣﺎ ﻳﻤﻜﻨﻨﺎ ﺗﺴﻤﻴﺘﻪ اﻟﺘﺤﻮل اﻟﺒﴫي ‪ visual turn‬ﻛﻤﺎ ﺣﺪث ﺳﺎﺑﻘﺎ ﻣﻊ اﻟﺘﺤﻮل ﻟﻼﻫﺘﻤﺎم ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻐﺔ ‪linguistic‬‬
‫‪ turn‬ﰲ ﺣﻘﻮل اﻟﻌﻠﻮم اﻻﺟﺘﻤﺎﻋﻴﺔ واﻹﻧﺴﺎﻧﻴﺔ‪ ،‬أي اﻟﱰﻛﲒ ﻋﲆ اﻷﺑﻌﺎد اﻟﺒﴫ ﻳﺔ ﻟﻠﻈﻮاﻫﺮ ﻣﺤﻞ اﻟﺒﺤﺚ اﻻﺟﺘﻤﺎﻲﻋ وﺗﺠﻠﻴﺎﺗﻬﺎ‪ ،‬ﺑﻞ وﺿﻢ‬
‫اﻟﺴﻤﺎع ﳍﺎ ﻛﻤﺠﺎل أوﺳﻊ ﻣﻦ ﺣﻮاس اﻟﻔﺮد ﻟﻴﺼﲑ اﻤﻟﺠﺎل اﻟﻌﺎم اﻟﺴﻤﴔ وﻣﻔﺮداﺗﻪ )ﻛﻤﺎ ﰲ رﺳﺎﺋﻞ اﻷﻣﻦ اﻟﻌﺎم ﻣﻦ ﺻﻮت ﺳﻴﺎرة اﻟﴩﻃﺔ‬

‫إن اﳉﺪل ﻓﻌﻞ اﺟﺘﻤﺎﻲﻋ ﻳﺘﻤﻮﺿﻊ ﰲ ﻓﻀﺎء ﺳﻴﺎﳼ وﻫﻮ ﺗﻌﺒﲑ ﻋﻦ رؤى ﻟﻠﻌﺎﱂ وﺧﻄﺎب‪ ،‬وﰲ ﻋﴫ "ﻣﺎ ﺑﻌﺪ اﻹﻳﺪﻳﻮﻟﻮﺟﻴﺎ" ﺗﻠﻌﺐ اﻟﺼﻮر دورا‬
‫ﻣﺤﻮر ﻳﺎ ﰲ اﻟﺘﻌﺒﲑ ﻋﻦ اﻟﻔﻜﺮة وﻋﻦ ﺗﻮازﻧﺎت ﻗﻮة ﺗﺘﺠﺎوز ﺑﻨﺎء اﳊﺠﺔ وإﺛﺒﺎﺗﻬﺎ‪.‬‬
‫وﺗﺴﴓ ﻫﺬه اﻤﻟﺤﺎﴐة ﻣﻦ ﺧﻼل ﻣﻔﻬﻮم ‪ multi model argumentation‬أي اﻤﻟﺠﺎدﻟﺔ ﻣﺘﻌﺪدة اﻟﺼﻴﻎ إﱃ اﻟﱰﻛﲒ ﻋﲆ اﻤﻟﻘﻮﻻت واﳊﺠﺞ‬
‫اﻟﱵ ﺗﻘﺪﻣﻬﺎ اﻷﻃﺮاف اﻤﻟﺨﺘﻠﻔﺔ ﰲ اﻤﻟﺠﺎل اﻟﺜﻘﺎﰲ واﻟﺴﻴﺎﳼ اﻟﻌﺮﰊ ﻣﻨﺬ ﺑﺪء اﳊﺮاك اﻟﺬي ﺷﻬﺪه اﻟﻌﺎﱂ اﻟﻌﺮﰊ ﻣﻊ اﻟﺜﻮرة اﻟﺘﻮﻧﺴﻴﺔ‪ ،‬إذ ﺷﻬﺪ‬ ‫د‪ .‬ﻫﺒﺔ رؤوف ﻋﺰت‬

Debate as a Tool for Teaching 21st Century Skills – in the Classroom and Beyond

Critical thinking, effective communication, the ability to collaborate with others,


research and analysis, information and media literacy – these are some of the
competencies and abilities often referred to as 21st-century skills, considered
essential for success (or, likely, survival) in today’s, to use diplomatic language,
‘rapidly changing world.’ Formal educational systems have been criticized for
underperforming in building these skills in young learners, and many of them –
critical thinking in particular – remain elusive goals.

This keynote will explore the extent to which we can view debate as our ally in
‫ ﻣﺎﻳﺎ ﻧﻴﻨﺎدوﻓﻴﺘﺶ‬.‫د‬ teaching 21st-century skills, addressing different competencies, and in what way
Dr. Maja Nenadovic debate education can strengthen them. At the same time, given the highly
specific context of formal, competitive debate, accompanied by (increasingly
‫ﻣﺆﺳﺲ‬ criticized) tournament culture, we will also address the ‘dark side’ of debate and
