The Origins and Effects of Poverty in the Philippines

Introduction:

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (year of 2015), 21.6% of the country's
population lives below the poverty line, making poverty a significant societal concern in the
Philippines. This poverty has created an unbreakable cycle of poverty and is related to a lack
of access to healthcare, employment prospects, and education.

This critique paper will look at the origins and effects of poverty in the Philippines,
and evaluate the success of current government initiatives and programs aimed at resolving
the problem.

Critique:

Lack of educational access in the Philippines is one of the key causes of poverty. The cost of
schooling is, at times, out of reach for many low-income families that restricts children's
access to future employment possibilities and sources of income. This further keeps people in
poverty because it makes it more difficult for children from impoverished homes to escape it
in the future.

Poor economic policies are another significant factor in Philippines poverty. A tiny
number of wealthy people and companies control a substantial portion of the nation's wealth,
contributing to the high degree of income inequality in the nation. Because of this, there are
few chances for the impoverished to better their financial status. This inequality in the
Philippines is a complicated problem brought by these elements. This further include
inadequate economic policies, lack of government assistance for the poor, and limited access
to possibilities for employment.

The government's initiatives and plans to combat poverty in the Philippines have not
been very successful. The Conditional Cash Transfer program of the government, called the
Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, which gives cash support to low-income families, has
come under fire for being inadequately executed and for failing to assist all the families who
require it. In addition, many government initiatives lack the financing required to have a
meaningful influence on poverty.

Conclusion:

In the Philippines, poverty is a significant societal problem that is fueled by a number of

issues, including inadequate economic policies, lack of access to education and work
prospects, and lack of government assistance for the underprivileged.

The government's present programs and strategies to combat poverty have not been
particularly successful and need to be reviewed and improved. To better the lives of people
who are poor and to advance the nation's general economic development, it is crucial to
combat poverty in the Philippines.
