This is an open book / note assessment. All electronic devices are NOT allowed except pocket
calculator.

Please note that not only the result but also your calculations / justifications must be provided in
order to achieve full credit for each question. An answer presenting only the final result will
likely earn zero credit.

Please do NOT use a pencil or red pen, write only on the front of each sheet, leave the back empty.

1. ⃗ [ 6 ,−2 , 2 ] . Compute the following

[12p] Given two vectors: a⃗ =[ 3 ,−5 , 1 ] and b=
expressions:

a. −3 ⃗a
b. 12 ⃗b+2 ⃗a
c. ¿ 3 ⃗a −4 ⃗b∨¿
d. a⃗ . ⃗b
e. a⃗ × ⃗b
f. Determine if a⃗ and b⃗ are parallel and provide your justification.

2. [18p] A woman on the South bank of a river wants to cross to the North bank on a boat. The
river is 50 meters wide and it is flowing from West to East at the speed of 0.3 m/s. The boat
has the speed of 0.8 m/s. Assume her destination is directly North of where she starts,
determine her velocity vector such that she can arrive at her destination.

3. [20p] Given two planes (P1): 3x + 2y + z = 3 and (P2): 4y + 3z = 7, using vectors

a) Find the Cartesian equation of the intersection line of two planes

b) Find the angle between two planes (P1) and (P2)

4. [10p] Let the volume of a parallelopiped formed by three vectors a⃗ = i^ +2 ^j + 3 k^ , b⃗ = 5 i^ +4 ^j

+ 3 k^ , ¿ c⃗ = i^ + ^j + x k^ be three cubic units. Determine x
