THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN MOZAMBIQUE

The English language is essential anywhere in the world, currently almost everyone speaks the
language, for work and study reasons. And this also applies in Mozambique, which needs the
language for aspects of commerce, studies, work, and tourism.

English holds significant importance in Mozambique for several reasons. Firstly, it serves as a
global lingua franca, facilitating communication with the international community, which is
crucial for trade, diplomacy, and tourism. English proficiency opens doors to global markets and
fosters economic growth. Moreover, English is a key language in education. Mozambique's
government recognizes its importance and promotes English language learning in schools. Access
to quality English education enhances opportunities for Mozambican students, as it enables them
to access a vast array of academic resources, including scholarship opportunities at universities
worldwide.

Furthermore, English is vital for technological and scientific advancements. In an increasingly

interconnected world, knowledge of English is essential to access the latest research, collaborate
with global experts, and participate in international scientific discourse. Tourism, a growing
industry in Mozambique, benefits from English proficiency. English-speaking tourists can
navigate the country more comfortably, while Mozambicans who speak English are better
equipped to work in the hospitality and tourism sector, contributing to economic growth.

In addition, English is crucial for social and cultural exchange. It allows Mozambicans to engage
with a diverse range of perspectives and cultures, promoting tolerance and understanding. It is
important to consider that English is a crucial language for accountants, managers, auditors and
inspectors due to the control of large companies holding foreign capital, taking extractive
companies as an example.
