Suggested answers/ideas

1 a The text is about issues to do with water: lack of access to safe, clean drinking water,
disease by drinking unsanitary water supplies, water shortages etc.
b Example claims: ‘Water is running out’; ‘We need to act now if there is to be enough
water for future generations’; ‘The human race cannot exist without water’; ‘Water is
essential for food production’.
c Example reasoning: We need water because each one of us ‘needs at least 20–50 litres of
clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking and keeping themselves clean.’
d Example evidence: ‘Friends of the Planet’; ‘Only 3% of water on Earth is fresh water.
Of this, only 0.5% is safe, drinking water, according to the United Nations. The other
2.5% of fresh water is inaccessible.’; ‘It takes 5000–20 000 litres of water to produce 1kg
of meat and 500–4000 litres of water to produce 1kg of wheat.’
e Bias: Yes, as the source is Friends of the Planet, an organisation concerned about the
planet wanting to make people aware of what they can do to save water.
