Poetry
BED IN SUMMER

1-The poet accentuates the difference between day and night. Discuss referring to the
weather at the poet’s country.
The poet accentuates / shows the difference between light and day - dark and night. In the winter
months, around Christmas, it is dark until about 8 o’clock in the morning, before which the
poet as a school boy has to wake at six, when it is still dark.
In the summer months, June to September, it is light until about 9 o’clock at night. The poet as a
child, he had to go to bed early at seven, while people were still walking in the streets.

2-From your study of the poem, which season do you think the poet prefers? Recite the
lines that proves that.
The poet seemed to like the summer time, yet it seems that he didn't like the idea to go to bed
so early while the birds are singing and people are moving in the streets, and when the
weather is so good and the sky is so blue for him it is time to play not to go to bed.

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day
3-The poet envies people walking down the streets, write down the lines which show that.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
In summer, the birds are singing and people are moving in the streets, yet the child has to go
to bed.
4-Quote/recite the lines where the poet says he prefers to play instead of sleep.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day
5-The childhood memories of the poet were the main motive behind writing this poem.
Discuss
In this poem the poet recollected the memories of the years of his childhood. In
winter, When he was a child he had to wake up while it was still dark to get
dressed in order to go to school. The poet remembered that he had to go to bed while it was
still daylight in summer
6-What is the mood felt throughout the poem?
How does the poet express his feelings in "Bed in summer
In " Bed in summer" the poet uses very simple , but effective words to tell us about his
feeling of sorrow and how the weather conditions in England annoy him. He shows how he
wants to be like the hoping birds on the tree.

7-The poet shed light on the contrast between day life and night life. Discuss with
reference to the weather conditions during which he spent his childhood years.
The child in the poem is contrasting the night in winter to the dayin summer. In winter, in
spite of the coldness and darkness, he wakes up and moves around in the candle light. In
summer, in spite of the good weather and daylight, he has to sleep.
8-Comment on the structure and the rhyme scheme of the poem.
The poem consists of three stanzas of four lines each.
The poet used very simple language . He didn’t use any old English words.
The rhyme scheme is the same in the three stanzas aa bb,cc dd, ee bb. the poems structure
consists of rhyming couplets that help create a rhythm through the poem, and would also
further underpin a child’s enjoyment of this poem.
9-Mention the writing technique in the above line and give examples.
a. Why did the poet use many opposites?
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle light.
In summer, quite the other way
I have to go to bed by day.

It is used to contrast the day life in summer to the night life in winter.
And to stress his suffering
