A letter to God

. People get support from family and friends during bad times. How does Lencho's family
behave after the
harvest is ruined?
Similarly, Lencho got lots of support and moral courage from his family. After his entire crop was
ruined in the
hailstorm, his family members solaced him and asked him not to lose hope. They reminded him
that in God's world
no one died of hunger. Lencho's entire family had faith in God's help.
2. 'Lencho was an ox of a man, working like an animal in the fields, but still, he knew how to
write. What does this
line tell us about the norm amongst such farmers, then?
This line tells us that normally the farmers working in the fields are hard-working but
uneducated. They can work like
an ox in the fields. But, Lencho could read and write. He wrotea letter to God for help after the
hailstorm destroyed
his cornfields.

office, the postmaster
opened the envelope to read his reply. He was expecting a note of thankfulness to God in the
letter.
4. The field was white as if covered with salt. This is how the field is described after the
hailstorm. The pelting
hailstones could have been easily seen as sugar cubes. Do you think comparing it with sugar
would have been
more appropriate? Why/Why not? (Most expected question)
A hailstorm can be compared to small balls of anything that is white in colour. But, here, the
comparison. to salt is
much better than sugar cubes. As sugar symbolises sweetness or happiness, whereas excess
salt signifies the spoilt
taste. The hailstorm spoiled Lencho's fields totally that's why it is said that the field was white as
if covered with salt.
So, comparing it with sugar would not have been more appropriate.

conversation
between Lencho and his wife as they watched the downpour turn into a hailstorm.
Conversation between Lencho and his wife- Wife: If this storm does not stop here, we will die of
hunger. Lencho: Yes, our hard work will go to waste. It must stop now.
Wife: We will have no corn left this year. Lencho: Don't worry, God can see everything and He
will not let us die of
hunger. Wife: Let's hope so. I have heard that no one dies of hunger
6. Lencho did not bother exploring any other means to resolve his situation but just turned to
God. Do you feel
that his approach was justified? Why/Why not?
I do not justify his approach of relying solely on God's help. It was totally illogical. Sorrow and
happiness are two
phases of life that everyone must stay prepared to face. Besides, praying to God for his mental
calmness he should
have approached his relatives for help and worked hard again.

emplovees I would have
definitely helped Lencho by giving out some money. "Many a little makes a mickle". One rupee
donated by 100
people would make up to 100 rupees without making much difference to the donor. However, it
would be a big helo
for the done.
(b) Of course, an employee can't say 'no' to a helping deed initiated by his/her boss. But, as an

help his children, so

his representatives.
He can be understood as representative of God as he made efforts to Lencho's prayers which

dishonest and
deceitful. He does not hesitate to write about his contemptuous attitude towards men in his letter
to God and he
calls the men at the post-office a bunch of crooks. He knew that God helps innocent people in
distress and therefore
does not hesitate in approaching him directly for help and neither is he bewildered when he
does receive a letter
signed by God. Faith is an expression of hope for something better. In today's practical world of
cut-throat

necessary. It motivates us
to be positive and be successful in what we do.

'Faith can move mountains. What did the postmaster do in order not to break Lencho's faith in
God. Explain.
Or
What was the letter to God about? How much did it serve Lencho's purpose?
When Lencho's crop was totally destroyed by the hail, he being a simple-hearted person who
had abundant faith
in God, started a correspondence with Him. In a letter he asked God to send him a hundred
peso giving examples
from the text A Letter to God.

the world. He had such
strong faith in God that he could never believe that God would not help him. He wrote the letter
with a very strong
conviction. This faith in God prompted him to write a letter to God asking his help. When he had
asked for hundred
pesos but received less, he could never imagine that God could have never made the mistake.
It was not out of
jealousy or anger he called post office employees a bunch of crooks. But it was his innocence
and simpleton
behaviour which made him address them in such a manner. He was an innocent person who
lacked common sense
and practical knowledge of the world.
to enable him to sow his field again and live until the new crop came. This envelope which was

to cement Lencho's
faith in God, the postmaster decided to collect money and send it to Lencho. He was able to

fields always promiseda
rich harvest but the earth was in need of some downpour. At supper, it rained heavily. alongwith

covered everything with the hails. As a result of this, his crop was totally ruined. Lencho's soul
was filled with
sadness. It was a terrible night for him. There was none to help him. Still he had a single hope.
It was the help from
God, He would definitely help him in this odd situation. So he wrote a letter to God, He
requested Him to send him a
hundred pesos. He wrote, "God, if you don't help me, my family and 1 will go hungry this year."
The post master
helped Lencho. He did an act of charity for him.
11. "If you don't help me, my family and I will go hungry this year. Lencho had faith in God but
he didn't manage
to solve the problem by himself. Did he lack the courage to resolve his matter himself? What
values did he lack?
Explain it in 100-120 words.
Lencho was a hardworking farmer. He was completely dependent upon the crops of his fields.
His annual crop was
completely destroyed due to heavy rains and hailstorm. In the entire village, there was no one to
help him during the
times of financial crisis. He had firm belief in God and hence wrote a letter requesting Him to
send 100 pesos so that
he could sow his fields again till the next crop. This act did not prove that he lacked courage to
resolve his problem,
but shows that he did not have any option left for himself. He had a firm belief in God. He was
an ox of a man hut
lacked. money to stand again.
12. Apart from his blind faith in God was Lencho a wise person? Was he justified in called post
office employees a
bunch of crooks ? Prove it.
Lencho was simple man, a farmer who lived in a solitary house. He hardly knew ways of the
world. He had such
strong faith in God that he could never believe that God would not help him. He wrote the letter
with a very strong
conviction. This faith in God prompted him to write a letter to God asking his help. When he had
asked for hundred
pesos but received les, he could never imagine that God could have never made the mistake. It
was not out of
jealousy or anger he called post office employeesa bunch of crooks. But it was his innocence
and simpleton
behaviour which made him address them in such a manner. He was an innocent person who
lacked common sense
and practical knowledge of the world.
13. Suppose you are the postmaster. Explain your feelings when you received second letter of
Lencho. Ans:
I opened the letter out of curiosity. I imagined that Lencho would have thanked God for sending
him the money. But
on opening the letter I was shocked to read that instead of writing a few words of thanks,
instead curse had been
poured on me. I felt very bad about my employees who had
been called a bunch of crooks'. Actually post office employees along with me had donated part
of salary in terms of
charity. It was difficult for me to understand that how I should react to the situation and how to
let Lencho know the
real truth. There is no point in sending him the rest of the amount. If 1 actually send him the rest
of the amount he
would keep on thinking that post office employees are actually cheats.
14. As the postmaster, write how you felt when Lencho accused you and your men of stealing
money? Ans:
When I received Lencho's leter. I felt downcast, shocked and discouraged. I did not expect it
from Lencho. l had
involved my whole department into helping this poor rustic fellow. It took me a lot of efforts to
arrange seventy
pesos for him. But this man proved very ungrateful. He called us a bunch of cheats and accused
us of stealing money.
I see no point in sending the remaining amount to this ungrateful fellow. If I send him the
remaining amount he will
be convinced that we had cheated him. This would damage the image of the post office
employees. Let him face the
reality that it was an act of foolishness on his part to have asked God for money.
15. Lencho is a very hard working farmer. It is his hardworking habit which makes him not deter
his faith. How do
you justify this act of Lencho ? Ans:
Lencho is hard working farmer. He is an ox of a man, working like an animal in the fields. He is
the only farmer who
lives in the valley with his family. He has great faith of getting help from God. He prayed to God
for downpour as he
knew his fields intimately. t is due to faith he even writes letter to God.
I fully agree with act of Lencho. The way he acted in at times of difficulty is fully appreciative.
Amidst such times he
wrote letter to God and with strong conviction was able to win.
16. The postmaster showed great exemplary action in his act. Can in today's times we can find
people like
postmaster? What would you have done if you were in place of postmaster?
Ans:
The postmaster was able to strengthen Lencho's faith in God. The postmaster was surprised on
seeing Lencho's
letter addressed to God. He knew that he needed more than good will to answer the letter but
still he tried his best
to collect the money to send to Lencho. The act of postmaster has really moved us. In today's
times it is quite
difficult to find people like postmaster. Even relatives and dear friends do not come near in times
of need. So, it is
quite strange to imagine person like postmaster gathering courage to help others.
If I were in postmaster's place. I would not have acted in such a wise and sensible manner.
Such acts really need
sacrifice.
17.Suppose you are the postmaster. How would you feel if you were accused by Lencho of
being cheat along witn

it would have been very difficult to collect seventy pesos for a simple farmer. This would have
made me feel very low
on being called bunch of crooks. I feel that postmaster was a great person by having acting in
such a decent manner.
Imight have created furore over the situation. I would have gone to the extent of hitting Lencho
and disclosed the
whole truth to him.

crest of a low hill in

dotted with flowers.
They always promised a good harvest. Lencho worked very hard in the field. To ensure a good
crop, some rain was
needed. Lencho knew his fields intimately. He predicted rain and his prediction turned right. It
started raining during
dinner. He went out to feel the rain. Lencho surveyed, with satisfaction as his crop was draped
in a curtain of rain.
Raindrops looked iike new silver coins to him.

he had immense
faith in God. So, he did not lose his heart. Lencho then wrote a letter to God. He requested.
God to send him 100 pesos to enable him to sow his field again. He dropped the letter in the
mailbox of the town.
The postmaster read the letter addressed to God. He wanted to preserve Lencho's faith in God,

The postman, who saw the letter addressed to God, laughed heartily. Never in his career as a
postman had he known
that address. He went to the postmaster who was a fat, amiable fellow. Thet postmaster abso
broke out laughing.
But almost immediately he turned serious. The postmaster highly commended the immense
faith of the writer of the
letter in God. That is why, he raised 70 pesos and sent it to him in a letter.
21. Suppose you are the postmaster who had collected the money to help Lencho. Write a letter
to your friend,
John, telling him how you felt when Lencho, in his second letter to God, called the post office
employees"a bunch
of crooks".
Ans:
I hope you must be doing well in your job. In my job. we come across different types of people. I
think ours is more
or less a thankless job. I will illustrate this with an unusually interesting incident.
In a village adjoining our town, there is a simple farmer named Lencho. I came to know about
his extraordinary faith
in God, when I happened to read his letter addressed to God. Danny! he actualy wrote a letter
to God for financial
help. His whole crop had been destroyed because of hailstones. Just to preserve his faith, I
managed to raise seventy
pesos from my employees and friends. I too contributed a part of my salary. This money was
sent to him in an
envelope as if it were sent by God. His demand was for hundred pesos. I was shocked when
lgot another letter from
him addressed to God. He had written that the balance amount of thirty pesos should not be
sent through us as we
were "'a bunch of crooks". We all were taken aback by his letter. I decided not to send him any
more money. But to
my surprise, my employees thought otherwise. So, once again we contributed and sent him the
remaining 30 pesoB,
What about the things at your end? Waiting for your reply.
Rest is as usual here.
Yours sincerely
Herbert

When the postmaster saw the letter addressed to God, he broke out laughing, but almost
immediately he turned
serious. He was amazed at the faith of the writer and wished that he too could have the faith of
the man who wrote
the letter. This shows that he was an appreciative and amiable person.
He was kind. therefore in order not to shake the writer's faith, he decided to answer the letter.
He was empathetic

urged Him to send a
hundred pesos. He reacted angrily towards the help offered by the post office employees. His
