This story ‘A Letter to God‘ is a story of extreme faith in God. G L Fuentes has tried to depict faith in God of
a simple poor farmer. Lencho was an honest, hard working, but poor farmer. His ripe crop gets destroyed
due to a hailstorm in the valley. Lencho had great faith in God and decided to write a letter to God to seek
financial help. The postmaster sees the letter and decides to help Lencho. He collects some money from all
the people working in the post office and puts it inside the envelope. Lencho opens the envelope and
counts the money and finds that it was less than what he asked for. He then writes another letter to God
and asks him for the rest of the money, but tells Him not to send the money through post. According to him,
they are a bunch of crooks who had stolen his thirty pesos from the hundred sent by Him.

II. Answer the following questions in 20-30 words each: (2 marks each)

1. Who was Lencho? What were his main problems?

Ans.Lencho was a farmer in South America, his main problems were that a hailstorm had totally
destroyed his crops and without financial support his family would starve to death.
2. Do you agree with Lencho calling the people at the post office ‘a bunch of crooks‘?
Ans.I do not agree with Lencho calling the people at the post office a bunch of crooks because it was
the postmaster who along with his friends and employees arranged the sum of 70 pesos(which
was quite a large amount) solely from his own salary and donations to ensure thaf Lencho‘s faith in
god would not shatter. He answered the letter out of his own kindness and provided him financial
support in a time when he was most vulnerable but Lencho reciprocated the favour by calling them
crooks for 'stealing' 30 pesos(though in Lencho‘s defense he believed that God had given him the
money and not the postmen).
3. What did Lencho compare the raindrops to and why?
4. How did rain affect Lencho‘s fields?
5. “God,” he wrote, “if you don‘t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.”
a) Why was Lencho upset?
Ans.Lencho was upset because he felt robbed of the 'money which god had granted' him and thought that
the postmen had stolen it.
b) What was he asking from God?
Ans.He was asking God to send him the money directly instead of through postmen because they
would steal his money.
c) How did he contact God?
Ans.He contacted god through a letter which he wrote on a Sunday dawn,he wrote how his and family
and him would starve if god did not give them monetary assitance and asked for help from him (he
asked for 100 pesos)and carried it himself to the town and dropped it in the mailbox.
6. What was the effect of Lencho‘s letter on God and what does he decide to do?
Ans.According to me,God though could not come directly to give Lencho the requested sum of money
he sent for the postman to arrange money for him,but also to ensure that Lencho does not solely
depend on God from then on God also ensured that out of the hundred Lencho would receive
seventy to cover the cost of food for his family. Thus Lencho received the money and when
'discovering' that the postmen had stolen the money from God he asked him to send the money
directly possibly implying that Lencho would be wary of asking for money God then on so he could
learn to stand up on his own during difficult times.
7. Why does the postmaster sign the letter “God‘?
Ans.Postmaster signed the Letter as God because it was originally addressed to God and he felt that
signing it as the postmaster himself would shatter Lencho‘s faith in God which the postmaster did
not want to do.
8. Why did Lencho not suspect the money given to him?
Ans.Lencho did not suspect the money given to him because his faith in god was immense.Instead he
believed that the postmen had stolen the money god had intended to reach Lencho.

III. Answer the following questions in 40-50 words each: (3 marks each)
1. . Who was Lencho and what circumstances forced him to write a letter to God?
Ans.Lencho was a farmer from South America who's field of corn had been destroyed by large
hailstones raining from the sky.The field was totally destroyed, flowers from crops were gone and
Sadness entered his soul. His family would starve if help was not provided. It was these circumstances
which forced Lencho to write a letter to god because he had been instructed that God's eyes see
everything, even what is deep below one's conscience.
2. How did the postmaster and post office employees help Lencho? How did he react to their help?
Ans.The postmaster had intended to sign the letter but upon opening it it became clear he needed
something more than goodwill and ink to answer it.He asked for money from his employees and
friends and gave a part of his own salary but still could arrange only a bit more than half of the money
requested. He signed as God to ensure that his faith would no shatter. When Lencho arrived and
received the money he didn't seem surprised, such was his faith in god but upon counting the money
and finding some money missing he accused the employees of stealing and told god to send him the
money directly nex time onwards.

Ans.The story ‘A Letter to God’ written by GL Fuentes enforces our faith in humanity. After reading the
story, we know that there still are people who help others without any self-interest.

Here, the postmaster and other employees lay an example of humanity and kindness for others.

First they all laughed at Lencho’s letter to God because they knew that there was no such person but
they were really moved by Lencho’s faith in God. They decided to help him to keep his faith alive and
firm. Even though it was not possible for them to collect hundred pesos but any how they managed to
