READING
In Northern Canada ecologist are concerned for the future of the Polar Bear population. The sea
usually freezes over by mid November, but this year it has failed to do so. As a result the bears
are not able to cross the ice to hunt for food. They are very hungry, wandering around the
coastline, eating whatever they can find.
One of the problems is that Polar Bears have a very strong sense of smell. They have been
coming into the towns and villages of Northern Canada, taking food from rubbish bins and
breaking down doors of the shops to get at what is inside. Another problem is that they are very
large animals, and the males can be very aggressive. Some people have already been killed
when they have come across a hungry bear.
The police and the wildlife service are doing the best they can. Polar Bears are already
endangered and the authorities do not want to shoot them. Instead, when bears are reported near
where people live, they are drugged and taken away by helicopter, back to the coast.
Every year for the last ten years, the freeze has come later and later in Canada. There will come
a time when the sea does not freeze, and by then it will be too late for the Polar Bear.
