Read the blog entries from five people who are doing voluntary work in different parts of the
world, then choose the correct answer (a, b or c).

Hari, Norway
I really enjoy working here, but the weather is really strange! I never know what to wear
because it’s never the same from one day to the next. In the same day it can go from being
pleasantly sunny and warm to cold, wet and windy, and then the temperature can suddenly go
up again by ten degrees! You can start the day wearing long trousers, a coat and a scarf, and
end it in shorts and a T-shirt!

With such long nights and short days, it’s essential to work quickly so that you can get your
various jobs done before the sun sets, especially if you’re working outside. Even the locals find
it difficult, but somehow they manage. I always end up with only half of the jobs on my list
completed, and then I have to ask someone to help me. I don’t think they like it very much when
I do this, but they always give me a hand if they can.

The heat here can be very dangerous if you don’t know how to deal with it. It’s really important
to drink lots of water, so we always have to carry a heavy water bottle. We can only work
outside before 11.00 in the morning and after 5.00 in the evening. The worst thing is covering
up when you go into the sun: you have to cover every centimetre of your body with shirts, hats,
scarves, etc. I know this stops you from getting sunburnt, but you feel even hotter. The next
time I do volunteer work, I’ll choose somewhere cooler!

Everyone else here complains about working in the heat. It certainly gets hot during the day, but
I come from a hot country, so I don’t mind it so much. The mosquitoes and flies are a real
problem though. It isn’t so bad during the day, but at night, when you’re trying to sleep, they
come into your hut and you become their dinner! They aren’t dangerous, like the snakes, or the
big spiders which can give you a very nasty bite, but they are very annoying.

The problem with working in such a cold environment is that simple things can suddenly
become very dangerous. Last week I went out to feed the dogs. It was so cold it was difficult to

breathe, and while I was out there was a power cut. All the lights went out and I couldn’t see
where I was. Stupidly I hadn’t taken my torch with me, so I couldn’t see anything. I started
walking towards where I thought my building should be. Then the power came back on, and I
realised I was walking in completely the wrong direction.
