Part B
Reading, listening and pronunciation

G Reading
Read the blog entries from five people who are doing voluntary work in different parts of the
world, then choose the correct answer (a, b or c).

Hari, Norway
I really enjoy working here, but the weather is really strange! I never know what to wear
because it’s never the same from one day to the next. In the same day it can go from being
pleasantly sunny and warm to cold, wet and windy, and then the temperature can suddenly go
up again by ten degrees! You can start the day wearing long trousers, a coat and a scarf, and
end it in shorts and a T-shirt!

Stanislav, Alaska
With such long nights and short days, it’s essential to work quickly so that you can get your
various jobs done before the sun sets, especially if you’re working outside. Even the locals find
it difficult, but somehow they manage. I always end up with only half of the jobs on my list
completed, and then I have to ask someone to help me. I don’t think they like it very much when
I do this, but they always give me a hand if they can.

Jane, Libya
The heat here can be very dangerous if you don’t know how to deal with it. It’s really important
to drink lots of water, so we always have to carry a heavy water bottle. We can only work
outside before 11.00 in the morning and after 5.00 in the evening. The worst thing is covering
up when you go into the sun: you have to cover every centimetre of your body with shirts, hats,
scarves, etc. I know this stops you from getting sunburnt, but you feel even hotter. The next
time I do volunteer work, I’ll choose somewhere cooler!

Guillaume, Bolivia
Everyone else here complains about working in the heat. It certainly gets hot during the day, but
I come from a hot country, so I don’t mind it so much. The mosquitoes and flies are a real
problem though. It isn’t so bad during the day, but at night, when you’re trying to sleep, they
come into your hut and you become their dinner! They aren’t dangerous, like the snakes, or the
big spiders which can give you a very nasty bite, but they are very annoying.

Naoko, Canada
The problem with working in such a cold environment is that simple things can suddenly
become very dangerous. Last week I went out to feed the dogs. It was so cold it was difficult to

breathe, and while I was out there was a power cut. All the lights went out and I couldn’t see
where I was. Stupidly I hadn’t taken my torch with me, so I couldn’t see anything. I started
walking towards where I thought my building should be. Then the power came back on, and I
realised I was walking in completely the wrong direction.

Example:
What does Hari wear during the day?
a mostly winter clothes
b mostly summer clothes
c it depends on the weather

31 What’s the weather like where Hari is working?

a It changes a lot.
b It’s mostly cold.
c It’s mostly wet.

32 According to Stanislav, what is the disadvantage of working in Alaska?

a He doesn’t have enough time to do everything.
b It is very difficult working outside.
c The local people won’t help him.

33 What is Jane’s biggest problem?

a carrying a water bottle all the time
b the times she has to work
c having to wear so many clothes

34 What does Guillaume dislike about the place he is working?

a working in the heat
b being attacked by insects
c being bitten by dangerous creatures

35 What happened to Naoko when she went outside?

a She was unable to breathe.
b She almost got lost.
c She lost her torch.

H Listening
You will hear a radio interview with someone who has spent a lot of time in deserts around the

36 In El Azizia in Libya, the temperature can increase a lot in a short space of time.

38 In 2003, a lot of people in Europe died during a period of very hot weather.
