and complete a full orbit in just a few Earth days.
◎ Terrestrial exoplanets ➔ Terrestrial exoplanets are roughly Earth-size worlds
outside the solar system composed of rock, silicate, water and carbon.
◎ Super-Earths or mini Neptunes ➔ Super-Earths, alternatively known as mini-
Neptunes, are planets that are up to twice the size of Earth.
◎ Rogue Exoplanets ➔ They are also known as isolated planetary-mass objects and
free-floating planets, which are worlds outside the solar system that are not
gravitationally bound to stars.
Discovery of Exoplanets
👉 About HD 110067:

◎ Announcement in Union Budget ➔ The Finance
Minister in her Budget speech in February 2023
announced the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ scheme, a
plan to operate hydrogen-powered trains on
select heritage and hilly routes that are
environmentally sensitive.
Hydrogen for Heritage Scheme
◎ Proposed Plan ➔ India’s plan to develop the technology involves the retrofitment
of hydrogen fuel cells on diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rakes. This prototype
is expected to run on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana initially.
◎ Indian Railways has proposed to run 35 hydrogen trains at an estimated cost of Rs
80 crore per train, with ground infrastructure costing Rs70 crore per route.
◎ Manufacturing cost ➔ one rake of six coaches with hydrogen propulsion is
estimated at Rs 80 crore
◎ Thirty-five train-set rakes (with six coaches each) have been sanctioned for the
ongoing financial year for eight sections–Matheran Hill Railway, Darjeeling
Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, Kangra Valley, Bilmora Waghai,
Patalpani Kalakund, Nilgiri Mountain Railways, and Marwar-Goram Ghat.
Hydrogen for Heritage Scheme
◎ Challenges ➔ According to, the Ministry of Railways the initial running cost of
hydrogen-powered trains would be higher, but it would subsequently reduce with
an increase in the number of such trains.
👉 Hydrogen-Powered Trains:
◎ Hydrogen trains basically run on hydrogen fuel cells. These fuel cells combine
oxygen and hydrogen to create electricity, which drives the train's motors.
◎ Environmental Benefits: Hydrogen trains are more environmentally beneficial than
traditional diesel trains as they do not emit dangerous pollutants like nitrogen
oxides, carbon dioxide and particulate.

👉 About
● MARS is a satellite-based system launched at the
27th Conference of Parties (COP27) in Egypt.
● It uses data from multiple sources to detect and track
methane emissions.
● Launched by ➔ the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), the European Commission, the
USA
Methane Alert and Response System (MARS)
◎ IMEO also works with countries to develop baselining studies to serve multi-
sectoral industry stakeholders and governments.
◎ Global Scientific Endeavors ➔ The IMEO has also initiated 34 scientific studies
across the globe. This research will cover where methane emissions come from,
and how to mitigate them.
◎ Goal ➔ OGMP 2.0 supports oil and gas companies to better understand their
emission profiles and, most importantly, to use this knowledge to mitigate these
emissions.
Practice Question
With reference to the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), consider the
following statements:
1. It uses satellite data to monitor major emission events and notifies governments
and companies who can address them.
2. It has been launched by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate

👉 About
● It is a satellite-based radio-navigation system used for
monitoring and control.
● Origin ➔ The U.S. Department of Defence started the
GPS program in 1973 and launched the first satellite
in 1978.
● GPS is a U.S.-owned utility that provides users with
positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
◎ Standard Positioning Service (SPS) ➔ The services provided by the GPS system
are designed to meet the SPS performance standard, the latest edition of which
was published in April 2020.
◎ In essence, the SPS standard tells application developers and users anywhere in
the world what they can expect from the GPS system.
◎ How does GPS work? ➔
○ GPS Satellite Broadcasting: Each GPS satellite continuously broadcasts a
radio signal containing information about its location in orbit, operational
status, and the time at which the signal is emitted.
○ Encoding Technique: The signals are encoded with code-division multiple
access. This allows multiple signals to be transmitted in the same channel
and for a receiver to be able to disentangle them.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
◎ On a smartphone, a GPS receiver picks a signal and uses it to calculate its precise
distance from the satellite.
◎ Applications of GPS ➔ Aviation, Marine, Farming, Surveying, Sports and Fitness
Tracking, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

naturally from decomposition of organic matter, including plants, animals
and animal wastes. Bacteria found in the intestines can produce ammonia,
also, a small amount of ammonia is generated when lightning strikes.
○ Commercial: Through steam reforming of natural gas and coal gasification.
◎ Uses It serves as a starting material for the production of many commercially
important nitrogen compounds such as:
◎ Fertilizers Urea, (H2N)2C=O, is the most commonly used source of nitrogen for
fertilisers worldwide. It can be applied directly into soil on farm fields for crops,

◎ Emission source Agriculture, including animal husbandry because of NH3-
based fertilizer applications. Other sources include industrial processes, vehicular
emissions and volatilization from soils and oceans.
◎ Effects
○ It Increases the Biological Oxygen Demand of water by reducing oxygen
availability for its aquatic life.
○ Source of nutrient pollution in water bodies leading to eutrophication due to
excessive agricultural field runoff.
