Art Appreciation Assignment #1

Vincent van Gogh is a Dutch painter who struggled with mental health issues and ultimately
took his own life. The song reflects on van Gogh's life, his artistic vision, and the challenges he
faced.
The song's message revolves around the theme of a misunderstood artist and his emotional
struggles. It emphasizes the importance of love, empathy, and understanding in the face of
mental health issues. The lyrics convey a sense of sorrow for the pain that van Gogh
experienced, and a hope that people will appreciate his art and understand the depth of his
emotions.
I think that the message of the song lies in the refrain "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just
to love and be loved in return." it suggests that despite van Gogh's artistic brilliance what truly
matters is the capacity for love and the need for reciprocal love and understanding.
Don McLean expresses sadness and frustration because he believes Vincent van Gogh wasn't
fully understood or appreciated by the people of his time. The lyrics suggest that they didn't
listen or know how to appreciate his art and emotions he empathizes with van Gogh's struggles
and wishes for acknowledgment after his death, using the song as a way to encourage a
renewed appreciation for van Gogh's legacy.
