HARRY AND MEGAN

3. News report 1 - Vocabulary

It’s a royal shocker - the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released this official statement today saying,
quote: "We intend to step back as senior members of the royal family and work to become financially
independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen."

Two possible factors may have led to this decision: the British press and the paparazzi. Back in
October Prince Harry released a statement comparing Meghan’s life to his late mother’s, Princess
Diana. "I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces." Harry
has continued to try and protect his family even more since the birth of his son Archie last May.

By stepping back from royal duties the spotlight will potentially be less intense. In their statement
they add, "We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America,
continuing to honor our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages. This geographic
balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was
born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the
launch of our new charitable entity."

It’s still unclear if they’ll now give up their royal titles, and the BBC is reporting the two didn’t consult
any other member of the royal family before today’s press release. A spokesperson for the Queen
writes, "Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand
the desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work
through."

And while there’s no confirmation as to where exactly they’ll live in North America, Canada’s widely
expected to be the country they settle especially as it is part of the Commonwealth. Just yesterday
the couple visited Canada House in London where they shared how amazing it was to get away from
it all over the holidays during their Canadian stay. [Meghan speaks with subtitles: Just to be able to
take in the warmth we experienced from the people, but also to walk around and see just the beauty
of Canada, to see Archie go. . . (gasps)]

Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, was most likely on board with this decision as he’s always
wanted a smaller senior royal household, resulting in less cost to British taxpayers and less of an
environmental footprint, which has been an important part of the Prince of Wales charitable fund
since 1979.

HARRY AND MEGAN

It’s official: Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will no longer be working royals.
The Queen, issuing a surprisingly personal statement this evening, saying she recognizes, quote
"...the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years..." and
that she supports their wish, "for a more independent life." She thanks the couple for their work,
saying, quote "Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family." And
in a special nod to the Duchess, she adds, "I am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly
become one of the family."

The Palace confirming the couple will no longer represent Her Majesty, nor will they use their Royal
Highness titles, but will remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They will also no longer receive
public funds and can now earn a living, but, quote, "everything they do will continue to uphold the
values of Her Majesty."

(Robert Jobson, Royal Editor, Evening Standard) The Queen is being quite robust by saying they can’t
trade on their royal titles...um...she’s making it very clear they cannot in any way tarnish the brand
of monarchy."

Palace sources also revealing this evening that Harry and Meghan now plan to spend the majority
of their time in North America but will keep Frogmore Cottage as their UK residence.

Alright, Lama Hasan joins us now live from London, and Lama, after all the uncertainty of recent
weeks, tonight’s announcement doesn’t mean Harry and Meghan will completely disappear from
the public spotlight when it comes to the royal family. (Lama Hasan) You’re absolutely right, Tom,
yes. Harry is sixth in line to the throne, he will remain a prince and he is still a part of the royal family,
which means that he will continue to attend big family events like the Queen’s elaborate birthday
celebrations. Tom.

Lama Hasan for us tonight, Lama, great to have you tonight. Thank you.
