3. Listening for gist

Speaker : My daughter Lily has just turned 15 and for the last decade and a half she has been the
light of my life, however, she is a light that needs to be fed and clothed and when she was
just a toddler, I made the decision to set up my own business and work from home. I now
earn enough money to make ends meet and I can even put some away for a rainy day but
there are many lessons I have learnt on this voyage of mine.

Speaker: The first and most important lesson that I learnt was to be adaptable. When I worked
full-time, I yearned to have everything planned out and I was a bit of a box ticker, but I
quickly understood that when working from home with a little one I needed to be flexible
enough to adjust those plans.

Speaker: The second thing I discovered was that while it is vital to get the input of others on many
issues there are times when you must just trust your gut. What do you believe the right
thing to do is? This works not only for your home business but also in your life as a stay-
at-home mum.

Speaker: The final lesson I have learnt is that to be a success takes time and how do you even go
about defining something like success? I feel that your definition of success is yours and
yours only so it could be making £1000 a month, expanding your business so that you can
hire a part-time member of staff or even still having enough time to play with your kids in
the garden, the thing is you must decide by yourself.
