SOCIAL PROBLEM – INEQUALITY

Inequality is one of the main social problems in Colombia since it refers to the quality of
being one thing different from another, or being distinguished from another by having
characteristics, values or traits that make it different and in the human sphere, it is known
when there is a lack of balance between two or more people. Inequality can also refer to the
lack of equity, balance or equality between two or more people, things, facts or realities. In
this sense, it can be related to social issues (social, economic, educational, gender
inequality); Taking into account the type, they can have serious consequences, both on a
personal and social level.

The National Council to Prevent Inequality defines inequality as “an everyday practice that
consists of giving unfavorable treatment or undeserved contempt to a certain person or
group, which we sometimes do not perceive, but which at some point we have caused or
received.” . Inequality is any distinction, without a rationally justifiable cause, that causes
harm or harm to a person or group of people in the sphere of their dignity. However,
inequality based on income, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity,
religion, as well as inequality of opportunity, continues to persist around the world.
Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, slows poverty reduction,
and destroys people's sense of fulfillment and self-esteem. This, in turn, can result in crime,
disease and environmental degradation.

Reducing inequality requires transformative change. Efforts must be redoubled to eradicate

extreme poverty and hunger, and invest more in health, education, social protection and
decent work, especially for young people, migrants and other vulnerable communities.
Within countries themselves, it is important to enhance and promote inclusive economic
and social growth to ensure equal opportunities and reduce income inequality by
eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices. Also, among countries, we must
ensure that developing countries are better represented in the decision-making process on
global problems, so that solutions are more effective, more credible and more responsible.
However, reducing inequality, both within and between countries, requires equitably
distributing resources, investing in education and skills development, implementing social
protection measures, fighting discrimination, supporting marginalized groups and foster
international cooperation for fair trade and financial systems.

In conclusion, inequality is a complex social problem, since inequality is a problem that

affects the entire population on a daily basis. Inequality will inevitably lead to migration,
but if managed properly, it will not only benefit migrants, but will also help reduce poverty
and social and economic differences. One of the main solutions is to redistribute different
resources in a more precise way and invest in important areas such as education or the
development of the country for a better future.
