Lesson 28 – Question Bank

1. Define irrigation efficiency.

2. What are the causes which affect irrigation efficiencies?

3. Define

a. Reservoir storage efficiency

b. Water conveyance efficiency

c. Application efficiency

d. Storage Efficiency

e. Water distribution efficiency

f. Crop water use efficiency

g. Field water use efficiency

h. Overall project efficiency

4. What is meant by uniformity?

5. Discuss

a. Christiansen’s Uniformity Coefficient

b. Low-Quarter Distribution Uniformity

6. A stream of 143lps was diverted from a canal and 110 lps were delivered to the
field. An area of 1.75 ha was irrigated in eight hours. The effective depth of root
zone was 1.9 m. The runoff loss in the field was 444 m3. The depth of water
penetration varied linearly from 1.8 m at the head end of the field to 1.2 m at the
tail end. Available moisture holding capacity of the soil is 25 cm/m depth of soil.

Determine the water conveyance efficiency, water application efficiency, water

storage efficiency and water distribution efficiency, irrigation was started at a
moisture extraction level of 50 percent of the available moisture.

7. Compute the reservoir storage efficiency for a 24 hr period when 3900 lit/min of
water are diverted from reservoir based on the following data, the rate of inflow
into the reservoir is 4450 lit/min and ΔS = 450 m3.
