A narrative, not more than 1000 words, describing current work or a project (or a

research) that you worked on and your contribution towards the completion of the
project.

At present, I and my co-trainees had finished a research entitled “Characterization of

fuel briquettes made from rice hull, corn cobs, and sawdust”, which was conducted at the
Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) as one of
our output during the On-the-Job Training Program.

The general objective of this study was to evaluate the fuel properties of charcoal

briquettes made from the combinations of rice hull, corncobs, and sawdust at specified

ratios. It specifically aims to; turn agricultural waste into bio-briquettes; produce smokeless

charcoal briquettes; determine the briquette composition with the best combustible quality;

and test the durability and effectivity of the briquettes, which served as an alternative fuel.

With this, as part of the completion of the study, data gathering, moisture content

determination, and different testing method was my contribution to finish this study.

As a result of this study, it shows that charcoal briquettes produced from agricultural

wastes (rice hull, corncobs and sawdust) can be applied to develop alternative fuels and

there is a potential that other biomass/agricultural waste/product waste will be used for

further studies.
Intended research work to be done while in the graduate program. This research
proposal should include the following components: Problem statement, significance of
the research, brief literature review, outlined methodology, and Gantt chart.

Students taking up master’s degree were needed to conduct researches in their

chosen fields. As a student involve in the field of agricultural engineering, I intend to
conduct experimental research focusing on briquetting of vegetable waste.

The purpose of my masteral is to conduct a study in briquetting to reuse unsold

products or rejected vegetable like eggplant and to determine its potential which is serves as
an alternative fuel.

Reaserch Title Proposal: Fuel briquettes made from unsold and rejected vegetable
Problem Statement:
Significance of the research: With the increasing price of commodities and fuel now,

people should find ways to maximize the resources but at the same time protecting them

from extinction.

The price of gasoline and its by – products has gone up so high that most mothers

can no longer afford to buy LPG in tank which is used as a convenient fuel for cooking. So,

as a result, mothers prefer to use firewood, coconut shells, dried coconut leaves, and

charcoal for cooking. But even the price of charcoal nowadays has gone up because of high

demand of most homes for charcoal in cooking; besides, extensive cutting of trees is

prohibited for nature’s protection. But most people insist of cutting trees and turn them into

charcoal to augment the budget at home.

Brief literature review:

Outlined Methodology: The process of briquetting were undergone through the following
procedures orderly; (1) Collection of materials, (2) Drying, (3) Carbonizing, (4) Pulverizing,
(5) Briquetting, (6) Drying, (7) Physical Properties Tests, (8) Mechanical Properties Tests.
