READING FOR MAIN IDEAS

Read the text. Then choose the correct answer.

CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE IN YOUR CITY

1 Cities can be exciting places to live. There are more people and more opportunities for cultural
activities and exchange of ideas than in smaller towns. But even in cities where we are surrounded by a
lot of other people, we can sometimes feel alone or lonely. At first it may seem hard to find people to
connect with in a big city, but there are many ways to make connections in an urban setting.

2 One thing you can do is spend less time at home and more time in public places like town squares,
open air cafés, shops, and restaurants. You can also walk the city streets whenever you can, instead of
using your car. Being in public places helps you notice people more and gives you a chance to connect
with them—even if it’s just offering a friendly smile or making brief eye contact.

3 Another way to connect is to try to make small talk whenever it’s appropriate. You can find many
opportunities every day if you try. For example, if you’re in line in a coffee shop, try to make eye
contact with the person standing in front of or behind you. Then if you feel the person is willing to
engage in a conversation, start by making small talk about the weather or even what you like about the
coffee shop. If you are ready to make the effort, you might make a friend.

4 You can also connect with people who share your interests, and the city is the perfect place to do
that. There are many art galleries, museums, libraries, schools, and community centers, where you can
find people who like the things you like. You can also join a club or class to meet other people.
Playing a team sport can also help you feel connected to others. Volunteering is another valuable way
to connect with people who care about the same issues as you do. In the city, there are usually many
organizations that need volunteers.

5 Cities are full of activities and opportunities. There are so many ways to make connections in the
city, no matter who you are or what you like to do. It might seem hard at first, but you just have to get
out there and start.
