Homam

Havan is of two types. Saparya Anga havan or Swanthanthra havan. Kalpasutra

has dedicated one special chapter for Havan, and as a general example states
Srividya havan there which can be extrapolated to Any gods.
Those who are fortunate to attend Navaratri directly may have noticed that
morning Ganapati havan a Special mix is Used. This is called Ashta Dravyas
Which is a Speciality in Kerala Alone. Other places does not use this. They
might have also noticed a Small/Big Red cloth Kuji being kept and put inside
the fire towards the end in the name of purnahuti. Except for the main person,
all other people will be having a mixture of Puffed rice with several ingredients.
And for some havan Payasa is used in some Karan also is used.
Havan procedure is of two type, can be tantric or can be vedic. Kalpasutra does
not prohibit mixing certain vedic elements in tantric paddhathi, as it takes for
granted that the upasaka is well versed already. So what an upasaka does not
know, when he performs a Tantric paddhathi havan alone is being detailed in
kalpasutra.
The preparatory rights of making kunda, making fire, doing sanskaras to fire all
has to be done with Shad Taras prefixing as shad tharas being trithari and
kumari.
Once kunda is made ready, Shadanga nyasa of the kunda is done with Agni
shadanga and the mandala of Fire is drawn in the kunda. Where the fire is to be
placed. The Vagisvari and Vagisvara being Parents for Agni. It is imagined that
Fire originates in mooladhara and comes out through third eye. After Removing
the Fire essence which craves for the Dead the fire is put on its place, and
Shodasa Sanskar is done.
It is here if we call the fire Ganapati, fire is for Ganapati. If we call lalitha agni,
fire is for lalitha.
A doubt may come, what if I am doing two havan same time. Say Ganapati
followed by Chandi. Principal goddess being Chandi, Ganapati only becomes
Anga Homa there even if its done first. Hence the fire become Chandika Agni.
So When compare to Chandi and Lalitha, fire is to be called Lalitha agni.
After sanskara, Agni chakra placed is to be worshipped and then Except for
Chandika homa there is no peetha sthapana in Agni. As Chandika havan is done
in a totally diff way peetha devathas are included there. Once preparatory rites
are over, We can invoke any God in the fire. However if we invoke for example
Ganapati and Chandi, 2 purnahuti offering is a must. But one thing to be taken
care that when we move on to next havan the previous god present in the fire
should not be send away. There is only one farewell that is in the end that too
only to the principal god who is being worshipped in that havan. If she quits the
fire rest all automatically quit.
Even if there are five injunctions Svaha, svadha, vashat, vaushat, and sraushat.
Only Svaha is being used throughout except the usage of Vaushat once in
purnahuti.
The major offering in a havan is Ghee (sometimes Karan), except for kerala
style Ganapati havan which is unique. All other material is categorized as
Kamya havan by Kalpasutra. kalpasutra concludes the Ahutis with vyahruthi
homa and Brahmarpan Ahuthi. This is Elaborated as Purnahuti.
How to offer? We have two ladles, both should be kept one on top, with ghee
filled in them. Having the purnahuthi packet also held along with the ladles,
using the brahmarpan manthra the ahuthi is offered along with ghee in ladles.
One has to make sure, ladles still remain in your hand and not in havan kunda.
Once this is done farewell of the god back to heart is to be done. This is havan
procedure. Apart from what all people see or witness are sampradayic and have
changes from kerala to Kashmir. Even the panchopachar we do, extra naivedyas
all sampradayic has no validity whatsoever in vedic vidhi or in tantric vidhi.
Hence even if we don’t have purnahuti packet two ladle full of Ghee is
essentially enough for purnahuti.
However there is something Amma has taught us to do during purnahuthi. Pack
Some Minimum items inside the Red cloth Offering.
1. Coconut, husked, shell removed only the Dry full coconut is to be kept. In
Malayalam we say kotta thenga.
2. Minimum 4 betel leaf (no should be even no. 2 is not used in shubham so
minimum even number is 4)
3. One full Areca nut
4. One banana/Pomagranate (other fruits are peoples fancy)
5. One piece of Dry Haldi
All tied in a Red cloth decorated with Sandal paste kunkum and a flower.
However, there is a disclaimer. Chandi havan is special, each chapter demands
for different kind of fruit in the Ahuthi that is a totally different case. If some
one is opting for Full Saptasathi havan, it should be done according to the
existing sampradaya. Any missing item cannot be said, I don’t have this what
wil I do, so only if we are ready with all items we can go for it.
As amma likes the herbal smell coming out of purnahuthi we usually put the
following items in the bundle
Dry haldi, Kasthuri turmeric, Nar kachur, dry ginger, Kapur khichri, Jadamansi,
Agar wood, Sandal wood, Red sandal wood, liquorice root, Gora back (Sweet
Flag), Ramacha, Vetti, Cardamom, Clove, nut meg, Jati patri, Star Anise, Lotus
Seed, Valerian Root, Nagar motha, Kushtus root, Haritaki, bhibhiyhaki, Goos
berry, Thippali, Pepper, Kabab Cheeni, Srifal (Bilva Fruit),Guggal, Sambrani,
Frankincense, Nag keshar.
One can extend this to infinity for Mahapurnahuthi on Navami day normally
108 Herbs are used by us in the packet.
All havan ends with a bali. Only difference is that, if it is saparyanga, if a bali is
done near havan, there is no separate bali near puja. Sarvabhutha bali is to be
given except for varahi, varahi bali is done, mathangi, mathangi bali and for
thithinithyas kurukulla.
If it is Full Sapthasati havan, prior to the start of the havan bali to 64 yogini,
bhairava and kshethrapala is done and then after havan, including Kadambari
Shakti, dikpala almost 25 balis in the end.
