DXL Post Production Color Settings Guide

Prior to a 2017 summer RED/DXL software developers kit (SDK) release, manual
application of proper color and gamma transforms are required to match on-set
camera images with images in post. In the future, matching color and gamma settings
will automatically apply when debayering images in post.

DXL files are encoded as standard REDCode RAW (.R3D) and can be opened using any
RED-supported tool or application that is current as of 2017.

Simultaneous to .R3D capture, DXL can also shoot a 2K or 4K proxy in the form of AVID
DNxHD/HR as well as Apple ProRes. Specific flavors of DNx/ProRes are dependent on
the camera framerate and resolution settings.

To properly display accurate DXL images, the post production tool settings must match
the in-camera settings. Set the gamma and color to the settings outlined below and
then apply the appropriate LUT transform for your desired viewing platform.

DXL color science is currently based on a RedLogFilm gamma, DragonColor 1 color

space input. In your grading tool ensure the default import for R3D is set to either
read the camera metadata or apply a global project setting with those parameters.
