Stat&Prob11Q4M5-6- Test Statistics on Population Proportion

Performance Task

NAME: Aliwana, Phoebe Denise T

SECTION:STEM 11A

Direction: In the following problem, (a) state the null and alternative hypothesis, (b)
select and compute the test statistic, (c) determine the critical value and the rejection
region, and (d) draw a conclusion.

1. It is claimed that 70% of SHS students in a certain district have internet at home.
A survey among 1500 SHS students in that district revealed that 1025 have
internet at home. Use 0.05 level of significance
a) Hypotheses:
 H0:(p=70
 HA: p ≠ 70

b) One-proportion z-test:
1025
 p̂ = = 0.68 , q0= 1- 0.70= 0.30
1500
0.68−0.70
−0.02

z= (0.70)(0.30) =
1500
0.0118
= -1.69

c) Critical value: (*two-tailed test)

0.05 ÷ 2= 0.025
0.5000 – 0.0250 = 0.4750
zcritical = ± 1.96

d) With a 5% level of significance, the computed test-statistic falls under the

non-rejection region thus the null hypothesis can be retained. There is
enough evidence to conclude that 70% of SHS student in that certain district
have internet at home.

2. Mr. Santos, a garment store owner, claimed that the brand of sweatpants his
customers prefer is Brand A compared to Brand B. He conducted a survey of 100
customers. It was revealed that 55 prefer Brand A and the rest prefer Brand B. At
5% level of significance, test the claim of Mr. Santos that the brand of sweatpants
his customers prefer is Brand A compared to Brand B.
p1: Brand A , p2: Brand B
a) Hypotheses:
H0: There is no difference in the customer preferences towards Brand A and
Brand B. (p1=p2)
HA: There is a higher customer preference towards Brand A compared to
Brand B. (p1>p2)

b) Two- proportion z-test

55  q1= 1-0.55= 0.45
 p1= =0.55
100  q2= 1-0.45= 0.55
45
 p2= =0.45
100

0.55−0.45

z = (0.55)( 0.45) (0.45)(0.5 5) = 1.421
100
+
100

c) Critical value: (right one-tailed test)

a= 0.05
0.500-0.050= 0.450
zcritical = 1.645

d) With a 5% level of significance, the computed test-statistic, 1.421 falls under

the non-rejection region thus the null hypothesis can be retained. We can
then conclude that Brand A is more preferred than Brand B by the customers,
just as Mr. Santos has claimed.
