Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION:
Nowadays have seen an increased concern about the potential harmful effects of sugary
drinks on dental health. This study wants to explore the corrosive impact of sugary drinks on
dental health, specifically investigating the connection between the consumption of these
beverages and dental caries. Dental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, impacting
not only physical health but also influencing the social and psychological aspects of an
individual. In recent years, the global rise in the consumption of sugary drinks has raised
significant concerns among health professionals and researchers due to its potential corrosive
effects on dental health. Sugary drinks, encompassing a wide variety of sugar-added beverages,
have become increasingly prevalent in today’s diet. Given that sugar-sweetened beverages
remain popular choices across various age groups, it becomes crucial to thoroughly understand
their role in the deterioration of dental health. Dental caries, commonly referred to as tooth
decay, poses a significant threat to oral health, affecting individuals from diverse population
groups. The primary goal of this study is to offer valuable insights into the specific mechanisms
through which sugary drinks contribute to the development of dental caries. The study adopts
an experimental approach, involving a comprehensive analysis of sugary drink consumption and
the prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth. By limiting the scope to the academic
setting of MUNTINLUPA COSMOPOLITAN SCHOOL, this research wants to provide findings with
contextual relevance, potentially informing future prevention and educational initiatives.
Embarking on this research, the researchs want to elucidate the effects of sugary drinks on
dental health, contributing to a better understanding of preventive strategies and public health
interventions. Through “The Sweet Decay,” we aspire to contribute to a broader discourse on
oral health, advocating for informed choices that enhance the well-being of students within our
school community and beyond.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

The purpose of this research is investigatr the impact of sigary drinks in Dental health. The
consumption of sugary drinks poses a multifaceted health problem with implications reaching
far beyond mere taste preferences. This issue is characterized by its association with a spectrum
of negative health outcomes, warranting attention and comprehensive strategies to address its
impact on individuals and public health.

One of concern related to sugary drinks is their harmful effect on dental health. The high sugar
content in these beverages contributes significantly to tooth decay and cavities, posing a
persistent risk to oral well-being. The correlation between excessive sugar intake and dental
issues underscores the importance of scrutinizing and moderating the consumption of sugary
drinks, particularly among individuals of all age groups.

Beyond dental concern, the connection between sugar-filled beverages and problems related to
weight. These high-calorie, empty-calorie beverages have been linked to weight gain and an
increased risk of obesity. The ramifications go beyond appearance and include more significant
health effects like a higher risk of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. Sugar-filled beverages’
effect on insulin resistance emphasizes the complex link between dietary decisions and overall
health.

Furthermore, sugary drinks have been implicated in cardiovascular problems, including

hypertension and heart disease. The correlation between excessive sugar consumption and
adverse cardiovascular outcomes emphasizes the need for a nuanced understanding of dietary
habits and their implications for heart health. This extends the discourse beyond individual
choices to the realm of public health, necessitating comprehensive strategies to mitigate these
risks.

In addition to these health concerns, the regular consumption of sugary drinks contributes to
poor nutrition. Often chosen over healthier beverage options, these drinks lead to an
unbalanced diet and insufficient nutrient intake. The displacement of essential nutrients by
sugary alternatives underscores the importance of fostering awareness and education regarding
the nutritional implications of beverage choices.
The Issue of sugar-filled beverages is a widespread and intricate health concern. In order to
promote healthy beverage choices, it necessitates a multimodal strategy that incorporates
public awareness campaigns, regulatory reforms, and educational activities. To reduce dental
difficulties, battle obesity and related illnesses, and promote general well-being through
informed food choices, a coordinated effort is needed to address the impact of sugary drinks.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:

The theoretical framework for “The Sweet Decay: Investigating the Corrosive Impact of Sugary
Drinks on Dental Health” could be built upon established theories concerning dental health and
the effects of sugary drinks. One potential theoretical foundation is the Health Belief Model,
which delves into how individuals perceive health risks and take preventive actions. In this
context, it may assist in understanding how people perceive the impact of sugary drinks on
dental health and whether this perception shapes their behavior.

Moreover, “Journal of the American Dental Association” in 2019 this Studies have confirmed the
direct relation between intake of dietary sugars and dental caries across the life span

These theories offer a framework for exploring the psychological and social dimensions that
influence individuals’ attitudes, behaviors, and practices concerning the consumption of sugary
drinks and its implications for dental health.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

To provide info and data based on their topic on how sugary drinks affect the dental health
of grade-11 STEM students of Muntinlupa Cosmopolitan School 2023-2024.

General problem:

The objective of the study is to find out the corrosive effects of sugary drinks in dental health.
Specific Problems:

1. What type of sugary drinks can affect the students’ teeth?

2. How can these sugary drinks contribute in tooth decay?

3. What are the possible challenges students might face when affected by these corrosive
effects?

4. How can students prevent these corrosive effects?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

In this section, the researchers will provide the significance or the importance of the topic.
The researchers will state the benefits for: students, teachers, parents, and future researchers.

Students – They will get the benefit of discovering the corrosive effects of sugary drinks in their
dental health and ways to prevent it. Through proper hygiene like brushing their teeth,
controlling their intake of sugary drinks, drinking plenty of water; students can now live on with
a healthy set of teeth and can also inspire others to take care of their own teeth as well.

Teachers – They will get the benefit of knowing their students’ safety and a healthy status of
their dental health. Without needing to skip classes for dental check-ups and having to tally the
tasks and quizzes they missed, teachers will not have to worry about anything else and can keep
focus on their own work.
Parents – Like teachers, parents will get the benefit of knowing their own child’s safety and
dental health status. They won’t have to worry about spending money to provide them
medicine and take them to the dentist every so often.

Future researchers – For future researchers, this will serve purpose as to use this as their
reference, gain data and information, and may pave way to new medicine, solution on how to
strengthen teeth. May also pave way on understanding the psychological reason on how people
eat or drink certain type of food. So many possible research can branch out of this information.

HYPOTHESIS:

For the 11th-grade students at MUNTINLUPA COSMOPOLITAN SCHOOL during the

academic year 2023–2024, we have formulated a hypothesis suggesting a positive correlation
between an increased incidence of dental caries and a higher consumption of sugary drinks. The
experimental study aims to illustrate a significant link between the frequency and quantity of
sugary drinks consumed and the initiation of dental caries in permanent teeth. The objective of
this study is to contribute to a broader comprehension of preventive measures and
interventions in oral health promotion by presenting empirical data that supports the theory
implicating sugary drinks as a causal factor in the decline of dental health.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

In this study the researchers will be putting a focus on the experimental, Sugary drinks
have a corrosive impact on dental health, leading to dental caries. This Studies have shown that
the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is strongly associated with an increased risk of
dental caries and overweight and obesity in MUNTINLUPA COSMOPOLITAN SCHOOL.

condition or characteristic, such as the presence of dental decay, at a specific point in
time or over a defined period.
6. Dental Erosion – When part of the enamel surface of your teeth is dissolved and
softened by contact with acids that could come from your stomach or from foods and
drinks.
